A better Kobold

Hello there. I have long been rather disappointed with the lack of kobold goodness in D&D, because they are one of my favorite races, even if I mostly end up killing them all day long. So I took it upon myself to make a more thought out kobold race. This is what I came up with.

Wyrmpriests are common, but the old model gave no option for a more caster-y kobold, so I've added the option of having intelligence instead of dexterity for those who're inclined to be smart. I gave the Shifty power a pretty sharp overhaul, I gave them low-light vision on account of their NPC brethren all having Darkvision. Master Trapper is Trap Sense from the old model, only slightly improved. Dragonskin I felt would represent their devotion and hardy nature to their tribes specific dragon/deity of worship. Paranoid Reptile is mostly fluff.

KOBOLD

Ability Score: +2 Dexterity, and +2 Constitution or +2 Intelligence
Size: Small
Speed: 6
Vision: Low-light
Languages: Common, Draconic
Skill Bonuses: +2 Stealth, +2 Thievery

Master Trapper: You gain a +2 bonus to all defenses against traps and hazards.

Dragonskin: Choose one of the following when creating your character: Cold, Fire, Acid, Poison, Lightning.  You gain a resistance against the chosen element equal to 5 + one-half your level. This choice is permanent, and remains with your character throughout his/her life.

Shifty: Whenever you shift, you gain a +1 racial bonus to your Armor Class until the start of your  next turn. You can gain this bonus only once per round.

Paranoid Reptile: You remain fully aware of your surroundings while taking sleeping and notice approaching enemies and other events as normal. In addition, you need only sleep for 4 hours to get the benefit of an extended rest.

Slippery Sprint: You can use Slippery Sprint as an encounter power.

Slippery Sprint
In the midst of the chaos, you slip past defenses and the larger combatants,
using your smaller size to scurry over the battlefield unhindered.
Encounter          Personal
Minor Action
Effect: Shift up to your speed.

I also made a couple of feats to this race, because kobolds have no support at all. I may add more of these. Koboldbreath is somewhat underwhelming right now, because I'm not all that good with balancing the numbers, I admit.

Feats

Heroic

Draconic Resilience
Heroic Tier
Benefit: You gain a +5 racial bonus to Endurance checks against diseases.
21st level: Increase the bonus to +10.

Defensive Runner
Heroic Tier
Benefit: Whenever you use your Slippery Sprint, you gain a +1 bonus to AC and Reflex until the end of your next turn.
11th level: Increase to +2. Increase to +3 at 21st.

For the race itself I'd suggest 2 tweaks:

One, specify that they can't later come back and change the choice. I'm not sure it's absolutely necessary but I've never seen a race with variable resistance so better safe than sorry.

Two, You might have room for another medium to major feature, it looks a little bare to me, then again I tend to overdo the features so get a second opinion.

The feats:

Draconic resilience: Ok disease (in my experience at least) is a pretty uncommon thing, and you've got the bonus up so high that any level appropriate disease would be nothing forcing a DM that does use disease to either send level inappropriate plagues, My advice would be to make the feat similar to superior fortitude, hand them a smaller bonus against disease, and maybe another check or two, and staple the whole mess to the scaling fortitude booster.

Defensive Runner: Might be able to get away with throwing a matching ref bonus on that one.

Kobold breath: Most feats that grant powers for you to swap out another power to do so, also they tend to scale with level.

Alright, I've made a few changes after thinking it over. They are in green, and I'll go through them here quickly too.

Added a permanent clause as suggested to the resistance. Better safe than sorry indeed.

Threw in a matching reflex defense bonus on Defensive Runner.

Kobold breath was given scaling damage and +hit, and now expends Slippery Sprint when used, and vice versa.

How about that?

I'm wary about adding another feature, but you're right it might be a little bare. If I add something it may be something mostly for the flavour, but I'll give it some thought.

Draconic Resilience I will most likely revamp entirely, after giving it some thought I'm not pleased with that feat at all. It may become a saving throw bonus instead. (Possibly against ongoing damage)

Since this is a feat power, consider having them swap out a class power and letting them use an implement instead of doing the +3/+6/+9.

Seems like a good writeup. However, desperate scuttle is confusing and can be interpreted in several ways.

A:You can interrupt the attack that bloodies you. If so, this might be a touch strong.
B:You move immediately after being attacked. If so, this should be an immediate reaction.

Despite my quibbling, this is a simple and effective writeup for the kobold.

Ability Score: +2 Constitution, and +2 Dexterity or +2 Intelligence

Thematically, I'm not sure why you went with INT here and not CHA. CHA is generally what's depicted as the casting stat for the dragon-blooded races. Mechanically, I'm almost sure that you did this because it would allow them to have the coveted and elusive CON / INT combination, but I tend to frown on such mechanically-focused reasonings when there are much better options to consider. Heck, even if INT were more appripriate than CHA, then why would CON be their static boost and not DEX?

Your choice here isn't unbalanced or anything, but I'm always critical of CON / INT because every second homebrew race seems to do it just because it hasn't been done even if it doesn't actually make good thematic sense to do it.

The rest of this is fine. I'm not sure that I agree with a lot of your choices here, but none of it is unbalanced. In fact, you've avoided the trap that a lot of Kobold renovators make of trying to give them dark-vision even though they shouldn't get darkvision, so kudos to you. I agree with Rampant that you could probably grant them another mechanically significant feature and still be fine, but it's not necessary.

Letting them swap out a class power might work better than simultaneously expending their 'real' racial ability, but I'm not sure. An implement is a cool idea though, makes it more of a wyrmpriest thing, doesn't it.

Seems like a good writeup. However, desperate scuttle is confusing and can be interpreted in several ways.

It's supposed to be an immediate reaction. Thanks for catching that.

I went with INT instead of CHA because the race to me consists of crafty and underestimated masters of traps and ambushing, which suggests that they are not only stealthy and sneaky, but also rather clever, and hold the capacity for much more intellectually than what adventurers and the world would give them credit for. I actually didn't give mechanics a thought beyond how it affected NAD's. Kobolds just come off as surprisingly smart for me, and I've tried to capture that.

Now that you mention it however, I'm not sure I have a reason that DEX isn't static instead of CON, and I might actually change that. The only reason I could think of is that when I started writing I focused my mind on their resilient nature of reptile humanoids. Then again my racial power suggests they're sprinters. Hm.

I agree with Rampant that you could probably grant them another mechanically significant feature and still be fine, but it's not necessary.

Aye, my problem right now is mostly that I'm not sure what that feature would be that wouldn't clutter the race needlessly. I am open to suggestion.

Thank you for all your help so far, guys!

There have been a lot of attempts made to rework Kobolds into a PC race, so you should see plenty of ideas if you do a search or something. I did a simple revamp myself, and here's what I gave them to replace Shifty:

Shifty: Whenever you shift, you gain a +1 racial bonus to your Armor  Class, Reflex Defense, and all saving throws until the beginning of your  next turn. This bonus applies only once, regardless of the number of times that you shift before the beginning of your next turn.

Of course, in my version that was their only racial feature other than Trap-Sense so I made it a bit more powerful. For your version, I might tone it down only to apply to one of AC, Reflex, or saves. But there are a lot of other ideas out there that you could probably take some inspiration from.

EDIT: Another good feature that I've just remembered that I've seen somewhere before goes something like...

Shity: When a power allows you to shift, you can shift one additional square.

I really like this ability. I have shamelessly reworded, downgraded and stolen this. I hope you don't mind.

Furthermore, Dexterity and Constitution have switched places to better reflect their speedy and skittering nature.

I'm a little more pensive towards the other changes, except the Resilience feat which I will look over in the coming hour.

Thanks again. Keep the opinions coming.
