| #1ifritusJun 10, 2010 14:03:21 | Hiya folks, Im back!
and my new project is my own little idea of a Homebrew Player's Handbook 1. basically meaning I'm creating 8 HB classes to fill the slots, with Shadow being the centre class, and Martial/Primal as the sideline ones.
Anyways, Im still in the early stages for 6 of them, and the one im doing now got me thinking of a "something new" I could include.
Now, this concerns all Classes and their respective "ability scores"
we have the 1 Primary Universal Attack Stat, 2 Secondary Stats, or V classes (i think) We have the 2 Primary Attack Stats, 1 Universal Secondary Stat, or Arrowhead classes (haha)
but what about an n class? two separate attack stats, each with a separate Secondary stat.
is this a good idea, or a daft one... forgive me if I come across as optimistic, as I the thought is fresh in my mind, before ive analysed it.
I suppose the iconic classes for this are those with distinctively different builds such as the Druid, Ranger or I think Warlord is best for this.
STR--->?? ! ! DEX--->??
As i overseen an argument where someone rightly said that it is pointless letting class features allow you to substitute different attack stats for the original
Thus, with the n structure the warlord can now be more fleshed out as a scouting.
so, what do you folks think of this little idea? |
| #2ifritusJun 10, 2010 14:20:34 | and since ive mentioned it, Ill give you folks the dear basics of my HB PH1 classes:
Homebrew Player's Handbook 1
Featuring Martial, Primal and Shadow heroes.
Overview of roles:
3 Strikers, 2 Leaders, 2 Defenders, 1 Controller
Classes:
Dreadlord: Shadow Striker Builds and associated playstyle: Executioner Dreadlord (Two-Handed), Manifesting Dreadlord (Close ranged spell)
Gladiator: Martial Defender Builds and Associated attack playstyle: Honourable Gladiator (Flail/mace and board), Dishonourable Gladiator (Polearm)
Juggernaut: Martial Striker Builds and associated attack playstyle: Focused Juggernaut, Rampaging Juggernaut (both Two-handed)
EDIT: Avatar: Primal Striker Builds and associated attack playstyle: Death Avatar , Life Avatar (both spellcasters of all ranges)
Necromancer: Shadow Controller Builds and associated attack playstyle: Lifestealer Necromancer, Sacrificial Necromancer (both short to long range spell)
Reaver: Shadow Defender Builds and associated attack playstyle: Death Reaver (sword and board), Soul Reaver (two-handed)
Shade: Shadow Leader Builds and associated attack playstyle: Bold Mind Shade, Cautious Mind Shade (both short to medium range spell)
Survivor: Primal Leader Builds and associated attack playstyle: Bear Survivor (Sword and Hvy shield), Serpent Survivor (dual wielding off-Hand), Wolf Survivor (Two-handed)
Now, obviosly there are a few Hb Necromancers out there, and i did do a very very crap Gladiator in the past, but he was a martial controller.. and NONE of my classes will have preposted material, cept of course the Survivor, whom my thanks are given to Swordior, as he helped me get my features, PP's and feats in order.
by the way, is it okay for Shadow folk to use implements?... wel the spellcasters anyway. |
| #3SwordiorJun 10, 2010 14:33:59 | Thanks for the mention .
You've definatly got your hands full with all these differnt classes. Anyways, as for the actual question, an N class could work, but it would have some sever hinderances for features. Besides that, it's basically a V class split in half. If you have X then you have Y too. It may also be a bit more limiting on races I suppose (particulary for Int & Str or Con & Int) not that you necessarily have those.
It's also okay for the shadow power source to use implements, Assassin's use Ki focuses like monks and weapons. Besides, otherwise they would all have weapon powers, and that would make a wierd Necromancer. |
| #4ifritusJun 10, 2010 14:52:34 | welcome... well that does make it easier
0.0 w
what's an X class?
hmm I wonder waht of my classes could actually make the N structure work....
haha a Z class, one where this happens:
attack1----secondary 1
secondary 1 becomes attack2------------secondary
Oh aye, if you backtrack a few pages, I put in another post for the "Hb leader Q" post :@)
cheers! |
| #5Johnathan_VagabondJun 10, 2010 15:01:17 | I think using two primaries with their own separate secondaries is a poor idea (daft, as you put it). However, having two primaries and two secondaries may not be so bad, where you essentially choose one Primary (out of 2) and one Secondary (out of 2). |
| #6rampantJun 10, 2010 15:18:53 | The problem with this 2 prime/2 secondary thing is sort of a why bother moment.
Why would a class develop two separate sets of powers with completely different physical and mental requirements. What would members of the class who specialize in either set have in common. What would bind them together?
For example
Say we have a class known as the DeathKnight a shadow leader.
Obviously he needs some melee options, so to keep it simple we go with strength as a primary.
Now we also want them to be casters and summoners of undead so we give them some more magey type powers driven by charisma (It is a leader class after all.)
Now one could make intelligence the secondary on their spells, and wisdom the secondary on their weapon attacks, but why? Why make the class more restrictive as far as which build you want to use.
BEcause that's the problem you create, it becomes very difficult to incorporate any powers unless they're the ones that specifically match your build. At that point the question becomes "Why would these powers be on the same class list?" They have nothing in common, and support completely different characters. |
| #7ifritusJun 10, 2010 15:35:03 | cheers rampant, as i did say it was the "idea" stage.... and your post highlights that it would only be a few VERY select classes if any that would suit an N style stat assignment.
and whoa did we have different ideas, you say it makes classes more restrictive, I was on the thought of making them more streamlined or "proffessional" which is where the > classes fail in the way of the different builds can dabble in the attacks of each other, being slightly less effective when you should be "crap" at it, in the martial perspective trianing with one weapon does not make you a master in all.
I even struggle to give our dear friend the ranger his N stats, and hes the best bet at completely different attacks styles. who is currently a V build, and that gives rise to conversion issues, who keeps the original secondary stat?
STR---> WIS DEX---> INT
and those were shaky ground ideas really.
In fact, the ranger could V class into etiehr Wis or Int, as Int is to do with learning and reasoning= practice, which is kinda odd seing as its mostly seen as a spellcaster/ Primal stat.
haha that effectively "ends" this post really, unless it just spears into a "its an okay idea" "its daft" argument between us all :+) |
