The adventure starts out in a big city. One PC is being attacked by a gang of robbers/thugs. The others, who have already banded together, save his sorry ass. He, in exchange, joins them and guides them around the city. While the city is bustling with rumors and chitchat, one stands out: In the caves of the fairly close Mt. Escoss supposedly lies a great treasure: A stone of knowledge. (It's basically a Foe Stone that provides information and hints other than enemy weaknesses when the PCs are stuck)

The PCs can mill about the city or head right to the mountain. They will fight some wolves on the way, and there are some prepared fights in the city if the players do certain things (like anger a drunken mob). Outside the caves, they find a group of goblins led by a kobold. If the PCs sneak up well, they hear the kobolds talking to a goblin with slightly better armor than the rest discussing the discovery of the Knowledge Stone will "aid them". The kobold flees into the cave and leaves the PCs to fight the goblins. After the fight, the PCs presumably head into the cave. They fight some minor demons and the likes, as well as some skeletons. Eventually, they arrive at a dead end with a rockslide blocking the path. They can't find a way to get past it. When they try to leave, the exit is blocked by a mob of skeletons and a figure in a black, tattered cloak. The kobold can be seen fleeing the cave. There is a chain around the figure (who is a powerful necromancer, important later) 's neck, which has a prism-shaped rock embedded in it. (Knowledge stone yay!) He sends the skeletons to kill the PCs, standing back and attacking with necrotic attacks. When defeated, his robes glow purple and he vanishes, leaving the stone behind.

The necromancer, kobold (a demon worshipper named Garrat), and an orc/goblin army plot to ressurect orcus to take over the world. They join forces, and  antagonize the PCs in particular, attempting to assasinate the PCs families and destroy their hometowns.

Seems like a good starter for the campaign. It's simple, allows the players to make choices, and you have a few key ideas thought out, so you can prep some initial encounters.

I probably would not prep too much for the city diversions, just have a few ideas jotted down somewhere if the players want to poke around town. Alternatively, get some clues to the knowledge stone plugged into the "random" town encounters . . . such as the ringleader of the drunken mob trying to negotiate himself out of trouble after the players see them off by adding some useful confirmation to the rumours.

And as always, if the players don't bite on your first plot hook, don't worry try something else based on what seems to motivate the PCs. Be willing to bend or break the story you have planned in the cause of entertaining your players.

OK, after one meeting where only 2 players showed up and one where all but one did, the story has begun.

The party did the encounter at the beginning meeting the cult and banding together. They mooched in the city and shopped, recruited a poor eladrin girl who had a soft spot for the halfling rogue and gave him a pony and a blackshroud dagger, and woke up to their inn in flames. They left the last meeting outside the inn fighting off a group of cultists, this time with a notable leader. After this fight is wrapped up, there may or may not be a quest to revive the warlock, depending on if he lives. After that, it's off for the stone of knowledge! I have 5 players, one of which who has missed both meetings (and of course HE'S the cleric lol). I may recruit another eventually, I know someone who might join.
