A bard's tale.

Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.

On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.

Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."

Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.

These are the lyrics to "One Tin Soldier" made famous by the film "Billy Jack."
I'm thinking as using it as a hook for a game, but I'm unsure of the direction to take.

My options:

1) The village town is under a curse and only by investigating the ruins can the party appease the spirit of the king and save the village.

2) It's a rumor concerning the ruins located at the top of the highest peak in the range. No one knows what the treasure is, but it lures many an adventurer in the attempt to discover it. Will the party investigate?

Does anyone else have any thoughts?

"Does anyone have any thoughts?"

Go ahead and hate your neighbour
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of heaven,
You can justify in the end

There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the Judgement Day
On the bloody morning after....er.....er
One Tin Soldier Rides Away

Oh, and

Now they stand beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red
Turned the stone and looked beneath it
"Just a plot hook" was all it said

I would start with finding this valley and this mountain kingdom. I would have them be ruins somewhere and the PCs have to find it. They have to ask local people and historians to find the mountain kingdom. Of coures now it is overun by something. An organized humanoid group has taken residence in the kingdom and below in the valley are humanoids subserviant to the mountain kingdom. The treasure is there and the humanoids do not know it is there. They saw an empty kingdom and took up residence. Start there and in the treasure room they find a map, tome or other adventure hook for furture adventures. Good luck
