I was browsing Wikipedia and came across Lovecroft's Dreamlands. I'm not overly fond of what I've heard of his Cthulhu Mythos, however I am quite intrigued by his Dreamlands series and think it would make a great plane in a PoL setting.

I was wondering if anyone else had ever tried this before and if so what success and/or problems they've had?

Chaosium has done several versions of a sourcebook for the Dreamlands in Call of Cthulhu. The latest one is a nice hardback, although it includes later material added by the author Brian Lumley who appears, in my opinion, to basically miss the point of the Dreamlands.

The Dreamlands are a good PoL setting. Some of the flavor of the Dreamlands is asiatic, but some is traditional fantasy. There are a lot of creepy locales, mysterious phenomena and weird temples. Ruins of an inhuman city on a nameless lake, black galleys taking slaves for sadistic aliens, a prehistoric monastery full of dark secrets, an underworld haunted by ghouls and worse, a number of dungeon-ready locations (the Vaults of Zin, several empty cities, the Plateau of Leng, etc.), just to name a few features.

As a Ref, you can decide how seriously to take the junk about the "Cthulhu Mythos". In your version, maybe those critters are just big 'uns waiting to be slain by epic heroes.

There are actually two options when thinking about the dreamlands in your campaign. The first is to make it an entirely new plane and make it exactly like the one in the Cthulu Mythos. The other option is to build it into the Shadowfell. Remember, the Shadowfell is a twisted version of our own reality and would fit in well.

A (kind of) third option is to blend the Shadowfell with the Far Realms. In this scenario the world you enter is not only a twisted and dead version of the normal world, but it also is connected to the realm of aberrations and madness making it alien and unreal. Perhaps this plane is a result of some mad aberration trying to break into our world through the Shadowfell or maybe the creation of an insane necromancer.
