A Racial Power with a Mark

Hi folks.

First off, you should know that the reason I am considering this is because the party does not have a defender at present.  The toughest frontliner that they have is a Bullywug Monk.  By coincidence, I already agreed to present that player with a new racial ability to replace the truly awful Rancid Air.

So it occurred to me that perhaps I could include a marking mechanic as part of this, with some kind of poison theme (at the player's request).

What do you think?  Is this totally untenable, and if not, what sort of power might you suggest?  I'd love some help with this.

Normally, marking would be absolutely unacceptable as any sort of racial feature. However, given your specific scenario in that you only plan on doing so for this specific character and for this specific reason and never again, then I think that it's probably fine. That said, I'm going to go ahead and tell you what a lot of others will tell you: Filling every role is not necessary, so play for a while without a defender to see if that's really even a problem that needs fixing in the first place. Otherwise, if you want a Bullywug much better than what is present in the Monster Manual (that's an NPC race, not a PC race), there was actually a similar request recently on the Optimization forum for a version of the Bullywug that didn't suck so bad... Actually, that was a Bullywug Monk too. Are you that guys DM?

Hahaha, no, not my player... but I love the art on that thread, and some good ideas for homebrewing the race in general.  Thank you for that.
