A really peaceful PC

Hi to all!
There is a weak spot in my heart for those in the company who do not steal the main role from the heroes of the situation (that's, overall, everyone else in the party;) ).
I ask to you a supportive classtinkering (or something like that).
Please follow my maybe-nonsense-muttering thoughts.

Many powers are aimed to accomplish a solid hit, a meaningful damage, and so on.
I do not see too much aimed to avoid being hit or injured or damaged.

Think to a server of a peaceful deity (or Belief, for that matter).
Would it be a complete nonsense a set of powers to lessen all of the to-hit, to damage, to harm etc... of someone-something else aimed against my All-Of-Me?
A combat and melee-oriented fellow could specialize in dodges and parries (even to the extent of not hitting -harming his/her attackers)..
A spell-ritual-psi-etc ...caster could specialize in spells enhancing AC, ST, etc etc.

--
Another way to see it, could be a new class with the ability to put his SomethingPower against any incoming attack (melee or magic or anything else...). Eg: the evil goblin would gladly use me as a landing place for his swordslashing exercise. I call forth my Belief like a protective shell. If my Belief-powered shell-vs-the melee is successfully rolled out, I am safe and my life as an adventurer did not harm anything or anyone.

ah, in this option, I would add in the option of some utility, non-offensive, spell or spell-like power... not to be a Nothing-Other-Than-A-Walking-BeliefShell :embarrass
--
Thank you...

You could create a class that is a very poowerful defender at the cost of their offense.

That makes sense. You could create a new class that way or maybe even add a new path for existing ones. You could make the powers that defend you make it so you can't move so far or can't attack right away afterwards to keep balance.

who, me?

For now, I can think that a fighter-type superDefender could, forfeiting ALL attack routines in that turn, channel all the available to-hit bonuses to AC, even splitting them among AC reflex end the other defenses as need arises...?

a priest could make use of a BeliefShell (Aura?), something like the Sanctuary spell effect, with modifiers tied to the difference between attacker level and priest level...

but, a wizard-based superdefender?
or a rogue-based one?

The wizard one is easy. Basically they could create walls of energy (or solid material) around them and would function in about the same way as a divine magic user would.

The rogue...well, I would say it would make perfect sense to them to be able to focus and increase their Reflex defense...maybe their AC and consider it a kind of reflex bonus?

I don't know about warlock but I would say the ranger would go about the same way as the rogue.

BelliefShell.
Looking at the Sanctuary (lvl 2 utility prayers), I was dreming something like this...

--
BeliefShell✦ Cleric base attack substitution
Divine, Implement
Standard Action Personal
Trigger: Targeted for attack
Target: Personal (One creature within 5 range at epic tier)
Attack: (Wisdom+lvl) vs. (Will+lvl)
Hit: The target receives a +5 bonus to all defenses forfeiting all possible attacks. The effect lasts until the end of your next turn.

It could be a power given by some god of no-warlike ideals to its followers...
for free? or for a cost (and what cost would it be)?

a feat could it be, with additional slots counting as bonuses to the check by a set amount (2 per slot, maybe)...

another feat could be, so to increment the bonus to the defenses by a set amount (1 per slot? maybe 2?)

A variant of the cleric limiting "armors and shields" to Cloth could master such things bartering slots (hide armor proficiency + nameother proficiency) with these effects, in order to having chances to remain alive against the legendary arthritic blind hostile kobold;)

Just a second...

Entropic Ward Warlock (Star) Utility 22
Fortune favors you; stars portending uncertainty lean in your
favor and frown upon your foes.
Encounter ✦ Arcane
Minor Action Personal
Effect: Until the end of your next turn, anyone who attacks
you must roll two dice and take the lower result. Each
time an attack misses due to this effect, you gain a
cumulative +1 power bonus to your next attack roll.

... Another one...

Shielding Shades Warlock (Star) Utility 10
You call up a swirling shield of darkness from some far domain,
interposing it between yourself and dire peril.
Daily ✦ Arcane
Immediate Reaction Personal
Trigger: You are hit by an attack
Effect: Reduce the attack’s damage to 0. If the attack targets
other creatures, they take damage as normal.

See?

that's a good point, thank you for the note!

To add to my views, I was trying to play a peaceful PC from the start (level 1), so I was peeking the first level abilities...:embarrass

In my opinion you should go Feylock/fighter, then use the least "combat" abilities he's got.

Or go for a Fighter/Feylock.

However it would be perhaps easiest to make a class from scratch.

Give them almost no weapon training and make them infuriatingly hard to hit. (Perhaps by giving them a bonus to AR but no more than cloth armor).

It could be a defender if you think real hard, just give lots of non-damaging powers. Or maybe redirection powers to redirect attacks against the opponent without actually making an attack.

I understand that, even if I miss the opportunity to make something useful to the followers of peaceful deities from ALL classes...

I admit it, if new class tinkering must be, than I can only see it a spellcasting PC (more priestly sided than not, like the 'cloistered cleric' thread) but I think me not being able to real class devising...

I'd recomend making a simple outline and posting it, from there you can ask whether effects are overpowered or not.

Just get the first few levels, once we know the flavor you're looking for we can help some more. (We refers to me... and the rest of the board! I'm not insane... Yet.)

ok, but before that, could you (all of you ;) ) tell me If and Why Beliefshell doesn't make sense?

Deities of Peace and peaceful Philosophies could allow such substitutions.

BeliefShell✦ Cleric base attack substitution
Divine, Implement
Standard Action Personal
Trigger: Targeted for attack
Target: Personal (One creature within 5 range at epic tier)
Attack: (Wisdom+lvl) vs. (Will+lvl)
Hit: The target receives a +5 bonus to all defenses forfeiting all possible attacks. The effect lasts until the end of your next turn.

with the addition of
--
BeliefShell Enhancer 1 Cleric Feat
Prerequisite: BeliefShell
Cleric BeliefShell chances turn to: (Wisdom + lvl + [2* BeliefShell Enhancer feat]) vs (Will + lvl)

--
BeliefShell Enhancer 2 Cleric Feat
Prerequisite: BeliefShell
Cleric BeliefShell defenses boost goes up +2 per slot

Just Wis Vs. Will would be sufficient.

Lvl is factored into attack and defense anyway. ;)

Unfortunately I don't quite understand how that is written, it works in my head (a little) however.... Well this is a better layout:

BeliefShell * Cleric Attack lvl 1
Your belief bolsters an allies defense.
At-Will * Divine
Standard Action * Close Burst 1
Target: One ally in burst or yourself
Effect: The target recieves a +2 bonus to all defenses until the end of your next turn, this effect ends if the target attacks.
Special: Increase range to 3 at 11th level, 5 at 21st level.
Sustain Minor: The effect persists.

That is (I think) the effect you're looking for.

Oh and For feats:

Improved BeliefShell
Benefit: Increase the bonus applied by your BeliefShell power by +1.

Thank you...

The structure of linear hp-damage systems is such that encounter protraction powers (mitigation powers of the sort you discuss) are seldom much fun for most groups.

The battle lasts forever, and has the same sort of outcome.

What might be worth looking into, if your heart is set on peace, are ways to turn attacks back on attackers, or end the encounter in a non-violent way.

Hmmm That would be true if and when all party member were pacific in the way I describe it, but I really think that things are not so ... good...
while all other members, the heroes, get along with "thud hack ayee" and so on ;) the one that looks like me buys a few rounds not-being-automatically-hit by the famous arthritic blind hostile goblin kobold or whatever else.

As a follower of a peace goddess I would never be allowed (or never allow myself) to hurt someone, even while responding to attack. I point out the question is strictly to enhance general survival of PCs who forfeits all attacks of all sorts.

hmm are sure of that? I thought math could help me, in a way to enhancing my chances against attackers with a lesser level of power. Again, never outshine "real heroes"; killed by the main villain but winning in a relatively easy way confrontation with the arthritic blind kobold that is 10 lvls of power behind me :D

Thank you very much, greatly and neatly done, even if I hoped my proposed numbers being not so hacked down
remember that peaceful characters are never a menace, they never attack by whatever means you could imagine...

But tell me, why the effect on self would be equal to the effect on a protected other one? I thought to pospone the ability to shield others at higher levels... An other option would be: upon the PC numbers are 1 higher :embarrass (e.g. my belief is less likely to adapt to another way of thinking, and there is already a battle between the attacker and me)...

I cut the power of the effect because +5 would entirely prevent enemies from hitting you.

+2 is okay, +3 is powerful, +4 is REALLY powerful, and +5 is broken.

Include a feat which enhances it if you want it higher.

Or add:

Special: The bonus is +4 when the target is yourself.

if you want a high bonus on the user.

So what else would you like to make the peaceful PC better?

Vow of Peace anyone?

Have you ever seen the 3rd edition prestige class Apostle of Peace from Book of Exalted Deeds? It's pretty much what you're describing. Basically, it's a cleric prestige class, but I could see turning it into a 4E base class. Which is actually something I've been pondering for a while now because I always wanted to try an AoP character in 3E but never got the chance to play one.

Anyway, he's basically got a lot of healing spells, a lot of defensive spells, and a lot of status effect spells. He can also turn undead, censure fiends, and use Pacifying Touch to calm enemies as a touch attack. If you take a look at the AoP, it might give you some ideas for powers and whatnot.

Unfortunately, I didn't get very far with my own efforts on this one. But I'd love to see what you come up with. Maybe I'll do some more brainstorming of my own over the weekend...

You could create a class that is a very poowerful defender at the cost of their offense.

Or a leader like a warlord who specializes in upping the defences of and moving his allies.
