The Would Be Kingdom

The Setting: A small would-be kingdom in the middle of relative nowhere.  Former settlements, now in ruins, dot the landscape.

The PCs: Because this particular land has been civilized and then abandoned frequently by many different empires, there are five current and legitimate ancestral claims to the land.  The five current inheritants (the PCs) meet each other through fate or providence, only to decide to be reasonable.  They will conquer this wild heritage together and build an honest nation out of it.  Outside of that, I don't really care who they are.

The Goal: The goal of this campaign will be tripartite.  1st) Reclaim the land from the wilderness.  2nd) Rebuild it into a nation.  3rd) Defend it from all comers.  Added to the normal stresses of being an adventurer (people trying to kill you) the party will also be trying to manage their nation.

The Lands

In the Mountains: The mountainous region runs north south along the eastern border of The Lands.  They split at the southern third of the range into a smaller series of mountains running south-west and the larger set running due south.  Between these is a are of deeply carved valleys, filled with waterfalls and ancient caves, that empties into the southern sea.  The northern two-thirds of the mountain range is massive and ancient, reaching into the sky with it's jagged forboding peaks.  Living near the center of the great peaks are dragons, of a number and age yet unknown, who awaken every so often to feed.

In the mountain's rocky core is a small dwarven colony, separated from it's founding nation by time and distance, breeding into them a sense of individuality and sovereignty.  Their founding empire, having retreated from those ranges, has made frequent attempts to recall the colony's citizens; they have refused.  The dwarves beneath the mountains are skilled in the normal dwarven things and face (whether at home or in their colony) the normal dwarven enemies.

Orcs, with a horde of goblin slaves, live in large violent tribes at the base and middens of the mountain peaks.  From there they mount raids into the dwarven colony and the plains and forests below.  They even raid the kobold burrow neath the inner chain (as the central mountains are called).  Though violent and selfish, the orcs are not above taking coin for honest mercenary work and have been hired by previous lords on occasion.  In at least one empire they enjoyed favored status as personal guards to the reigning lord.

Kobolds live deep within the mountains, deeper than the dwarves, neath the inner chain.  Their burrow rests beneath the mountains where dragons are said to keep lairs.  From there they fiddle and tinker with all manner of traps and alchemical madness.  Joined in their quest by escaped goblins, the burrow is teeming with life.  Not ones to rise above violence as a way of life, they too engage in midnight raids on the dwarven colony and, in braver moments, on orcish tribes.
