Proto-mortals- In the beginning the Overgod created the first mortals. They were humanoid in general shape but had few defining characteristics and were generally without purpose. The Overgod gave each of the lesser gods a portion of the Proto-mortals to mold as they saw fit, which gave birth to the traditional humanoid races. However, a now forgotten god never claimed his portion so now a faction of these beings still exists in a distant land seeking purpose from a none existent god.

So basically they would be a blank slate that would be able to adapt to any role similar to humans but without as much drive or ambition. Originally I was going to make them an NPC race but I think I am going to add them as a player race. Does the following seem balanced:

RACIAL TRAITS

Average Height: 5' 0" - 6'2"
Average Weight: 120 - 220

Ability scores: +2 to one ability score of your choice
Size: Medium
Speed: 6 squares.
Vision: Normal

Languages: Choice of one language, Common

+2 to two skills of your choice.

Free Proficiency with a weapon of your choice.

RACIAL POWERS

Proto-Mortal Adaptability

Eons without a guiding purpose or ethos has forced your people to be able to react to many situations relying only on themselves.
Encounter
Free Action Personal
Effect: Add a d6 to a d20 roll you make. You may use this ability before or after seeing the result.

Thank You for taking the time to read this.

[highlight]As this is discussing a home-brewed race, it belongs in the House Rules forum. I will be requesting its transfer there.

I like the concept of the race and you have done a fair job balancing, except for one detail. They don't scale against the other races, Give them a bonus to INt and Dex, or Wis and Cha (giving them two that don't govern the same derense makes them a bit overpowered). But great job dude, ill be looking for you're posts in the future.

Thanks for the input. I wanted them to be a flexible race which is why I didn't give them set racial modifiers. But, you maybe right about them not scaling with the other races. What if I dropped them to +2 to one skill but at the character creation the players can choose to give a +2 bonus to Str and Con; Dex and Int; or Wis and Cha.

Also I have question about how to introduce the race. Originally I was just going to allow the players to choose the race at the beginning. But in order to keep some mysticism about the race I was thinking about allowing them to choose the race only after meeting them. So they reach the island where the proto-mortals live and then saying congratulations you can now create a proto-mortal PC if your current one dies. But I thought this maybe a bit gimmicky. Kinda of like in a console RPG when you preform a side-quest you unlock a new character.

I'd suggest giving them the ability to take racial feats without meeting the race requirements. Sure, the Dragonborn breath weapon feats are worthless, but Dragonborn Sight or Frenzy? There are some nice race specific feats that I'm sure would look really interesting if one could mix and match them.

I like this idea and it fits the flavor I am going for. I am not sure but this seems to be a powerful ability so I'm not sure if I am balancing it correctly. I have made three updated versions of the Proto-mortals (still working on the name I might change it to something like Antehominis).

Height, Weight, Speed, Size and Vision same as above.

Show
Version One: RACIAL TRAITS

Ability scores: +2 to one ability score of your choice

Languages: Choice of one language, Common

+2 to two skills of your choice.

May choose the racial feats for any race descended from the proto-mortals (this is mainly to keep players from selecting warforged feats since they are not modified proto-mortals. I'm still toying with origins but Dragonborn may also fall under non proto-mortal races)

Free Proficiency with a weapon of your choice.

I'd go with +2 to ability score of choice, +2 to skill of choice, and proficiency in weapon of choice. Combine this with being racially morphic with feats, and I think that would more or less do it. Maybe at Paragon Tier allowing them to triple class, but that could be overdoing it. You might also want to check out information on Changelings (Eberron) or Doppelgangers for further inspiration.
