| #1lolwatzorsJul 17, 2008 0:17:49 | INTRODUCTION Aerosia, once a land of beauty and splendor, with towering cities and lush endless forest, clear as crystal lakes and safe mountain valleys. Then war came, not just any war, a war that pitted the mortals against the gods themselves. Such a conflict could not have a pleasant outcome, but the mortals had grown strong under the protection of the gods. In this time they rose to heights the gods had not planned for, combine science-like methods to power of magic. Creating things of their own; ships that can fly, creatures of mixed blood, and other things that scared the gods. If the mortals where so strong, soon they would have no need of the gods, so the gods felt they most show the mortals who was the more powerful. This, however, was their greatest error, having fought amongst themselves, and the Dark Ones, for so long, their strength was all but depleted when they attacked the land. Though weakened, their power was still awesome to behold, leveling cities, gutting up acres of forest, and swiping aside fields of soldiers. The mortals fought the armies of the gods, the angels, devils and demons the gods had at their disposal. Bloody and chaotic battle rang all over the world, death and pain saturated the very fiber of the planet, corrupting the very essense of existence. Aerosia was changing, the taint of death and the taste of divine blood was doing strange things. The aftermath of the conflict continues to plague the land to this day. Though the mortals were victorious over their creators, perhaps the gods will have won the war. Though the greatest of them now lies dead, his body consumed by the land of Aerosia itself, driving all manners of guardians and beast insane, the united front of the gods was scattered. The fate of Aerosia now rest in the hands of a brave few, as the mighty armies and air fleets that existed before the war were mostly destroyed by the terrible might of the gods. With sword and spell, they seek out the mysteries of the world, to see if there is a way to better their existence, or perhaps some more sinister intent. the LAND The geography is simple enough, with your typical variety of features; forest, deserts, lakes and streams, what have you. A man could travel from one end of Aerosia to the other and see the same variety one would expect. The major change one will notice are the 'stained grounds', areas of land warped and twisted by the comsumption of divine blood. There is an unkown amount of these areas, and the affects they have are terribly unkown. You have about two-thousand miles to traverse west to east, and about one-thousand to traverse north to south, if you'd like to see all that Aerosia has to offer. Of course this is somewhat possible, considering all the means one would have available to you to travel. Not just saddle and horse are the tools of travel, you have the remain sky fleets, even a few more exotic choices. Though, any journey would surely be a lonely one, since few travel these days, the deserts would seem extra barren, the forest extra ominous, even when flying from place to place on the deck of a flying ship, you'd be one of a handful of passengers. Few venture from the safety of the cities, huddle behind the towering walls contructed during the conflict, or in a mining town or other such vocation centric locale. Unfortunately, there exist no safe place, for monsters still roam, the insane gods seek their personal vengences lashing out at citys and nations from time to time, and its rumored that Dark Ones stir beneath the crust. the PEOPLE After the war with the gods, peace only lasted a few years, mortals soon vying for what resources they could find. Wars were fault over the precious remains of airships, as well as who owned what land or forest or mountain. Though not all went back to bloodshed so swiftly. The elves were without a home, and several clans seeking refuge in the land of the deva, while others are left to wander about seeking what life they can as eternal vagabounds. The dragonborn, sorcerous creations never had a home to start, and live an odd life, flowing in and out of whatever society will take them. Those that were not displaced, live in what parts of their land that was not changed by the war. The devan still hold onto a few of their cities in the sky, as well as their more terrestrial holdings. The asuran still must lurk amongst the gaian, while the gaian build towns and cities, much like ages past. The largest change it seems is the reconstruction of all that was destroyed. Civilization was pushed to the brink of breaking before the end of the conflict. Every town or city bares some scare from the fight, even if it was not involved in a battle. Some towns are left empty, their whole populations moved elsewhere or died in the battle. Its like everything is the same, but somehow less of what it was. The devan courts are only a few hunderd memebers, instead of the thousands before, the elfen clans are now many families that united for mutual protection. The dragonborn soldiers, no longer forced military slaves to do the bidding of their masters, are left to roam the country side to do whatever their will pleases. In the end, life goes on, and the people still struggle to get by, even with the convience of some magical aid, life is not as easy as it was before the war. The few who do not make up the majority of life on Aerosia have a unique view of the people around them, like outsiders, yet part of the picture. It gives them what they need to change what the see around them. ((More will be added once I finish writing the other sections)) |
| #2lolwatzorsJul 19, 2008 0:10:53 | What, no critique over how the setting sounds? |
| #3dirtyfrankJul 19, 2008 0:32:34 | Seems interesting enough. Need to explain the histories of a few races more. Are you looking for advice or just someone to give opinion about it? |
| #4lolwatzorsJul 19, 2008 0:52:59 | Both, and I've worked on the history some, but I'm taking a cue from the 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, and doing this kinda interesting world intoroduction thing they did. Where you just touch on the keypoints for the world, so people haev a starting point without getting bogged down in the details. |
| #5dirtyfrankJul 20, 2008 1:40:00 | Flesh out a sort of back story and history for each race and you could post them in this forum for feed back. I now I would like to hear more about how they fit into the world. Should have the first few with a link to this thread. This well allow for you to use a bit more detail and not need to release your world all at once or as a novel. You could also have a thread on the different deities and how they fit into everything. Maybe even differing ones for the astral sea, elemental chaos, shadow fell, and feywild. Remember try to keep things short at first. Give more information as people give feedback. |
| #6lolwatzorsJul 21, 2008 1:36:44 | Well, I should probably have mentioned something about the planes.... considering in this setting, there is only one.... The elementals chaos, astral sea, all that...can be found on the 'material plane'...though a better way to think of it is, the barriers that are typically between planes are just terribly terribly weak. And I've already worked on some of the racial history :P |

Do you mean that these 'planes' bleed through into the physical world or that they never existed in the first place? If they bleed through what can happen is if an area becomes to 'attuned' to a certain type of power (elemental, astral, whatever) then the world actually changes to embrace this aspect. For example if an area has ample flooding, fires, earthquakes and other natural disaters then the area destabilizes becoming much like the elemental chaos. Further areas that are saturiated in high levels of magic may take on aspects of the astral sea. The story seems to take on the Gods vs Mortal, did the God vs Primordial battle ever take place in your game? If not there may be no reason to write in the elemental chaos into the game (unless of course you like it). In any case being that the mortals did go up against the gods and you want to write in elemental creatures, perhaps they fought on the mortal's side. If the Promoridal War occured in your history then they join the side that is killing gods, if not then the elementals could be the mercenary creatures the Angels in the MM are written as and the mortals made them one hell of an offer. Also the story as of yet, one landmass is this the entire world or simply one continent you wish to flesh out before moving on? |
| #8lolwatzorsJul 22, 2008 0:23:04 | On the questions of the planes, you're kidna hit the nail on the head. That was the same line of thinking I was going with. If you go too far into a cave, the next thing you know you're in the Shadowfell so to speak. The same holds true with the other planes, you get lost in a forest, next thing you know the Feywild. Assuming of course its the right cave and right forest, and those areas are really blends of the two realms. As for elementals, they still exist, and as for the Primordials v Gods, its fairly in consequential whether they fought or not, since that was well before the Gods v Mortals. Primordial like creatures exist, they infact shaped one of the human offshoots in this setting (think an analouge for the tiefling). To note, there is somewhere in the neighborhood off 100 or so 'gods' for this world, where has there are only 13 primordials; primordials actually fufilling the roles of gods in the setting atm. Only one continent is currently habitable in the setting, due to what happened during the war, so just working on one landmass. |
| #9Mist-BoundJul 23, 2008 19:14:38 | Kind of reminds me of a setting put out by White Wolf called Scarred Lands; it was about a world where the gods slew their more powerful parents, divine entities called titans, but the blood spilt poisoned the land and the sea, causing mutation, monsters and madness to sweep the world. You might want to try taking a look at that; you might find some material you can use for inspiration or even rework for your own setting. |
| #10lolwatzorsJul 24, 2008 18:10:18 | I tend to avoid white wolf, it left a bad taste in my mouth; plus, that setting sounds familiar, sure it wasn't sword and sorcery (or did they get bought out by whitewolf)? |
| #11rentauriJul 24, 2008 18:26:39 | Whitewolf uses that story idea for there Exalted line to. Except in it when the Gods rise up they give some of there essence to the mortals, exalting them. Said mortals wipe the floor with the Primordials, those that died in the war curse the exalted and as time goes by the people go plain loco. |
| #12lolwatzorsJul 24, 2008 20:19:44 | I've actually read a lot of Exalted, don't remember why. Not going to say it has had zero influence on me, this just mostly just 'stuff I've come up with' (this is not me claiming its original, just saying it not directly ripped off one thing or another, it is just a bunch of things floating in me head). There is a race in this world that is kinda like the Solar Exalted (is that right) But that is because the Solar Exalted is probably based off the same thing I based this race off of, so it only makes sense. |
| #13Mist-BoundJul 25, 2008 20:34:30 | Scarred Lands was by Sword & Sorcery, though I think White Wolf picked it up at some point. Not sure. |
