| #1shadow272Jul 16, 2009 1:13:05 | The Ale Mug and You I found that another RPG game had a drinking system that had no sort of benefit, but quite a lot as far as backfires. I was concerned. Yes, my party likes random role-play, but would converting the system into DND 4e terms be a waste of time? Would no one use it, or perhaps would it be used once, laughed at, and then discarded? So, here is the system I came up with that I hope combines a decent balance of fun and utility. Drinking Alcohol Whenever a character begins drinking alcohol, he or she should probably keep in mind how much they can handle. In game terms, your character has a Drink Limit equal to your Constitution Modifier + ½ your level. Normal drinks, such as a mug of ale, count as one drink while stronger drinks, such as spirits, count as two (or more, DM’s disgression). For each drink after their Drink Limit, the character must take an Endurance Check to see if the alcohol starts to kick in. Stronger drinks would have a negative modifier, average alcohol would have no modifier, and weak alcohol might have a positive modifier (alternatively strong can be –2, average can be –1, and weak can be +0). For each failed Endurance Check, you receive a negative effect and for certain amounts of passed Endurance Checks, you receive a bonus (see chart below). If you fail too many Endurance Checks, you get Totally Smashed, and must roll a D8 to see what effect you get. When you drink, you have to roll to see how long the alcohol affects your system. The Alcohol's effects last for 1d8 hours. If you reach the point of Totally Smashed, add three hours to the duration. I think I might adopt that... it's easier to explain to my party... Thanks! @KNishiuchi: yeah.... well, up until now we've been using the d20, 10+ and the person is drunk. It was mostly a dismissive device so we could get back on focus... but I thought it'd be fun to give an actual use to getting drunk xD |
