I know this subject was discussed before, but I was wondering if anything evolved from it.

How would you make which deity you worship (as a cleric or paladin) mean something? A cleric of Bane has access to the same powers as a cleric of Corellon, of Kord, of Lolth, etc.

Any suggestions on minor tweaks that may make a particular deity more attractive to various players? I'm thinking like, "If you worship deity X, your thunder damage does an extra point of damage. If you worship deity Y, your AoE powers are good for 1 extra area of squares. If you worship deity Z, your Thievery skill gets +2", or something like that. (Just examples, I know these ideas are 99.999% broken.)

Of course, you could only have one deity, even if your PC pays lip service to the others.

Any ideas?

Aren't those kind of things what you get feats for? Y'know, to add +1 thunder damage (there's a feat for that) or +3 to Thievery (there's a feat for that), etc?

If a player wants to theme his cleric after his faith, he can do it by selecting appropriate feats. There's no need to start throwing out what amount to bonus feats for it (and absolutely do not start in with requiring that a cleric choose those feats).

You could alter a class feature? It need not be bonus feats.

The most basic change is if a character worships an Evil deity they do necrotic and either cold or fire as damage types. Instead of radiant.

The feats in the player's hand book are a good starting point. Also you could create exclusive powers for the gods you feel should have them. And before someone says "No you can't do that" if you can have racial paragon paths. You can have specific god powers.

Don't the Channel Divinity feats already cover this?

Each Channel Divinity feat is tied to a specific god, and the character has to worship that god (as well as have the Channel Divinity feature) in order to take that feat.

In my campaign I wrote up a Channel Divinity for each of my 20 or so gods. Some of them were just the PHB feats renamed to suit the name of a god in my campaign.

I had thought about the Channel Divinity feats, I just wanted something with a bit more, I don't know, flavor. One feat tied to a particular deity just didn't seem to do it. I'm not looking for anything super-powerful or anything, just a little more specialized in minor tweaks. Maybe I'll just change the names of some of the powers and the damage type just for flavor, and maybe create some new feats if I feel daring enough. I don't want to make any one type of cleric more powerful than another. I see some decent suggestions, though, so I'll start exploring a bit more.

Reflavoring powers is great, even making some powers do alternate types of damage (necrotic instead of radiant for an evil god, fire for a god of fire, etc).

Encourage PCs to take the Channel Divinity feats and use them in battle; it can really make a difference and show the differences between worshipers of different deities.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you have to stop there. Just that even with these suggestions it makes a notable difference. Try it out and have fun!

I've seen some suggestions for a paragon level Channel Divinity feat for each god too. I don't have the link, but I've seen it somewhere.

Oh hey, that's not a bad idea. Maybe a paragon path for each god or something! Ooooo

I think they actually did a god based paragon path for a forgotten realms god in a recent Dragon. Might want to look it up.
