Alternative Campaign Ideas

I used to be, and still kind of am, a DM for D&D but I dont have many opportunities to run a regular group.  It usually comes down to me working and what not.  What I am wondering is if anyone has come across rules or guidelines to run a Role Playing Game remotely.  I'd hate to dumb the combat portions down too much, but I would like a way to allow the game to progress even if I cant bring all the players together.

Any thoughs?  I know it's kind of an odd question.
