| #1johnthedm7000Feb 02, 2009 17:30:44 | 4th Edition Taint Rules The corrupting influence of evil is a concept explored in numerous books, films and games, including D&D which came out with taint rules in both 3.0 and 3.5, which provided penalties to players who were exposed to (or committed) overwhelming evil. While the rules for such taint provided considerable flavor, they were uneven in their implementation, with some providing penalties and others providing both penalties and bonuses and limited players to displaying 3 symptoms of taint for depravity and 3 for corruption. This system intends to capture the feel of taint rules for past editions while ironing out the mechanically wonky bits that have plagued such systems in the past. Acquiring Taint: Acquiring Taint Characters can acquire taint in several different ways: Committing acts of unspeakable evil: in cultures throughout the typical D&D setting certain acts earn universal condemnation amongst races and peoples with even the slightest moral code-murder, torture, genocide, and **** as well as fouler acts warp the mind of those committing them and result in the offending character gaining depravity. This does not represent external evil creeping into the character’s mind, but rather represents the wearing away of one’s moral compass as characters begin to treat others as pawns and toys rather than as individual creatures worthy of respect. Even characters that describe themselves as “hardened” or “jaded” are not immune to gaining depravity in this fashion-indeed, one could argue that being extremely hardened to or jaded about the suffering of others is a sign of one gaining depravity. Exposure to areas warped by evil: whether due to the presence of demons, foul creatures from the far realms, or simply areas forever marred by evil of a less supernatural variety (such as the execution of an innocent man by a corrupt court, or the shack where a serial killer went to hide his “conquests”) can result in character’s gaining corruption through no fault of their own. Typically, there are only certain areas in the blighted zone that bestow corruption (the area around the altar where innocents were sacrificed to dread gods), but in the cases of extreme blights, every square foot of the area might potentially bestow corruption. This corruption is typically applied to a character after a certain length of time and is accompanied by a feeling of instinctive disgust that warn both the player and his or her character that it would be wise to spend as little time in the location as possible. Certain sanity-rending locations that warp the minds of those who travel through them, like an area tainted by the energies of the far realm might very well bestow depravity instead as character’s minds break under the strain of sights alien to any sane man or woman. Exposure to dread items: While tools and weapons both magical and mundane have no moral significance in and of themselves, the uses they are put to or the techniques used in their creation can sometimes result in them being a vessel of corruption or depravity. A blade carved from the bones of a whimpering slave carries with it an imprint of the suffering of the one who “donated” the material for the blade and might whisper words of condemnation and hatred to a character who chooses to carry it, slowly increasing his or her depravity. A weapon wielded by a demonic general or an unknowable far-realm entity might have acquired some of it’s master’s inhuman corruption, and might plague a wielder with disgusting growths. Then of course, there are weapons and other items specifically crafted by mad cultists or vindictive spell casters that slowly drive their wielders insane with lust for power, or that cause them to rot from the inside out. |
| #2NovacatFeb 02, 2009 19:25:36 | I believe the more proper term would be "perineum". |
| #3johnthedm7000Feb 02, 2009 20:32:55 | Hilarious- yes novacat, you've discovered my secret motivation for posting on the homebrew section of these forums-not to develop a balanced mechanical system for representing mental and physical corruption by eldritch lore and horrifying acts, but to analyze how the section between one's genitalia and **** relates to fantasy roleplaying. :P A gold star and a for you.Now does anyone have any feedback on the mechanics of it? |
| #4NovacatFeb 03, 2009 0:11:05 | A gold star and a Why thank y-- hey wait... This cookie's filled with sarcasm! But anyways... that giant conglomeration of text is too much trouble to read, much less even think about implementing. Too much. Just too much. |
| #5johnthedm7000Feb 03, 2009 22:22:50 | Thanks for the comment...I'll try to make it more readable in the future. By the way-is it okay if I sig the "sarcasm cookie" bit? It's absolutely awesome. And for that you get a sarcasm free cookie![]() Hopefully someone can decipher it in it's current form, because I'm unable to edit it for some reason. |
| #6zeratulcraftFeb 04, 2009 0:07:36 | I read most of it, especially the effects of perineum, I think you've got the right idea with the penalties/bonuses, but I'm not sure if the numbers are all good. |
| #7NovacatFeb 04, 2009 1:27:38 | I read most of it, especially the effects of perineum, I think you've got the right idea with the penalties/bonuses, but I'm not sure if the numbers are all good. Since you've read it, maybe you could give me a summary of how perineum affects a character's NADs? |
| #8zeratulcraftFeb 04, 2009 15:21:46 | Since you've read it, maybe you could give me a summary of how perineum affects a character's NADs? Very little, some of the third tier mental symptoms give you a +1 to (so far) either reflex or will defences. The others tend to provide more situational bonuses than constant ones, which I like, it's also rather easier to balance. +2 damage while having CA is a fair whack easier to balance than +2 to damage constantly. |
| #9johnthedm7000Feb 04, 2009 19:12:15 | Added some more symptoms to the perineum. Any suggestions regarding new symptoms that could be implemented (along with a general idea of their mechanical effects) would be wonderful. As would commentary on individual symptoms. |
| #10zeratulcraftFeb 05, 2009 4:10:47 | Perhaps something like... Denial : The world is not real to you, the sky is not blue, it is all an illusion. You gain a +1 to your Will defence, but a -1 to your Reflex defence, you are convinced that anything coming your way can be disbelieved into nothingness, so perhaps you are a bit slower than you should be about getting out of the way of that dragon's breath. Perhaps that crosses more into Delusional, or at least a form of it. EDIT: Oooh just thought of another. Perfect : You are convinced you are as perfect as you could ever need to be for this moment. You do not even have to try, whatever will occur is what will occur. Your conviction of perfection results in a -1 to Fortitude defence, but once per day you may reroll any skill check you just rolled, you must use the second result, even if it's lower. Sometimes, you really are just perfect for this moment. |
| #11johnthedm7000Feb 05, 2009 18:18:03 | Thank you Zeratulcraft for you input-I've decided to adopt Perfect, although I've called it Arrogant and turned the penalty to fortitude defense into a saving throw penalty. I can just picture in my head an arrogant wizard afflicted with a poison who says "You think this drivel can harm me?! I AM A GOD!!" and as a result of that hubris succumbs to it. I do like the re-roll idea as a way to represent the character's delusion about him or herself becoming real though. Thanks for the idea-I should be adding corruption symptoms shortly. (ie. the sort of stuff that happens in the Warhammer universe when one touches chaos, the sort of physical symptoms effecting Saidan users in the Wheel of Time). |
| #12johnthedm7000Feb 05, 2009 21:31:10 | Added Obsessive and Deceitful as depravity symptoms-I'm looking for around 40 total, so characters with maxed out depravity and a thirty in wisdom or charisma have some variety in the mental symptoms that they can choose from. Also looking for some inspiration for corruption symptoms. Thanks a bunch guys! |
| #13johnthedm7000Feb 06, 2009 10:16:51 | Added a new mental symptom-depression. I'd really appreciate some commentary on individual symptoms-I'm worried that the balancing for some of them (particularly aggressive) is off. |
| #14johnthedm7000Feb 06, 2009 16:08:28 | Added quite a few physical symptoms-although I'm not quite done with the mental ones I want to get a good start on the more direct effects of perineum. ![]() Please tell me what you guys think and inform me if you have any ideas for new symptoms! |
| #15zeratulcraftFeb 06, 2009 18:22:37 | Deceitful reminded me of the Joker from the latest Batman movie, which is great, really. He tells so many lies about who he is and how he got that way that he's probably not even sure which one is correct anymore. Hehe, and Shriveled Flesh reminded me of Christian Bale's character from the Machinist, seriously, that's some creepy weight loss. All in all I think it's good, Obsessive has a great flavour attached. But I'm not good at the number crunching for the balance side of things, I just think you're doing great ![]() EDIT : Perhaps a rank 3 Shriveled Flesh could start exposing bone in the finger tips, granting a claw like attack or something. |
| #16johnthedm7000Feb 08, 2009 18:00:37 | Posted two new physical symptoms-including Wrigglers (for some tentacley goodness) and Claws, which was a deformity feat in 3.0 and 3.5 that I feel fits perfectly as a corruption symptom-particularly as the result of demonic influence. Thank you Zeratulcraft for your suggestions and for your encouragement-it's high praise that some of these symptoms (and their effects) remind you of the Joker, who is at least in my opinion a wonderful example of a character with a high degree of depravity. I also incorporated your suggestion for a corruption symptom that grants a claw attack into the "Claws" symptom. I should be continuously adding more physical symptoms and will get around to adding Tainted feats that require certain symptoms or certain levels of taint. |
| #17zeratulcraftFeb 08, 2009 18:30:17 | I'm not sure how the strength penalty in Wrigglers works with the bonus to grapple you gain. Grapple is arguably a strength based check, after all. Also, Extra Eyes needs to be a physical corruption. Maybe start with 1 granting a percep bonus and penalty on saves vs gazes or lower defences vs gazes or something. Then as it advances, more and more eyes erupt from all over the body, more perception, but maybe a higher chance to be crit? All those vulnerable spots can't be good for you, after all. EDIT : And you're welcome, I love the taint mechanics ![]() |
| #18johnthedm7000Feb 08, 2009 18:47:16 | Yeah, at first I was worried about the strength penalty from wrigglers making the bonus to grab attempts useless-but since I specified that the wrigglers only inflict that penalty on strength based ability checks and skill checks (not attack rolls) I think I'm okay. The extra eyes thing is an awesome idea and it will be implemented shortly. |
| #19johnthedm7000Feb 08, 2009 19:26:41 | Added extra eyes, bulbous eyes, and slimy skin to the list of physical symptoms. I'm thinking of doing a bunch of feats that are similar in concept to the spell-scarred feats from the FR setting, creating a mini class that's made up of powers catered to specific symptoms (like having a summoningesque power that enables a character with internal corruption to vomit up a little homunculus to serve him or her, or having the voice in one's head plage another with it's ramblings). What would you guys think about that? |
| #20zeratulcraftFeb 08, 2009 20:48:59 | Heh, that sounds pretty awesome actually, "go forth my vomitlings! destroy them all!" Perhaps a more severe physical corruption could be Gills, or other bizarre changes to ones breathing. Oh! WINGS! Membranous wings, maybe not usable for flight, but glide/slow fall. |
| #21johnthedm7000Feb 09, 2009 13:40:21 | Added unnatural respiration, along with ravenous, for those tainted individuals who just can't stop themselves from noming that delicious dead comrade. I'm trying to think of a way to do wings and gills that won't seem either lame or "AWESOME!" to those afflicted with them. I want taint to be, at the very least something that people say "you should get that checked out" and at high levels makes them say "oh my gods what is that thing?!! BURN IT!!" I guess it's all in the description, but I just can't shake the fact that most D&D players I know, when acquiring taint-based wings would see it as something completely awesome and not as a double edged sword. |
| #22johnthedm7000Feb 09, 2009 16:02:27 | Added unnatural respiration level 2 to the list of physical symptoms, along with Odor of Decay. Ideally I want around 40 mental symptoms, and around 40 physical symptoms, so even 2 characters who go demigod and max out Str or Con or Wis or Cha can have some divergent symptoms. So any further suggestions for mental symptoms would be appreciated. I'm also working on some ideas for powers for the tainted initiate multi-class feats, so any ideas you guys could provide would be good. Additionally, I added various options for removing taint that DMs can implement based on the mood they want to evoke and their group's play style. Ideas thus far:
Just some ideas for powers-tell me if you guys have any more. |
| #23johnthedm7000Feb 09, 2009 19:54:50 | I've decided how I'm going to make the "Tainted Initiate" feats-I'm going to take page out of the Playing Warforged Dragon article and include individual feats which allow you to swap out a power of a particular level for a power that plays off of a particular symptom. Some should be posted shorty-this allows for multiclassed characters to have taint-based powers and is a more elegant solution than simply making them into multi-class feats. |
| #24zeratulcraftFeb 09, 2009 21:57:52 | Aye, I think with the limited number of powers, it'd work better as a series of power swap feats, similar to the Dhampyr/Warforged power lists. And I like Odor of Decay, it's like...something out of White Wolf. |
| #25johnthedm7000Feb 10, 2009 0:21:32 | Added the first tainted feat and associated power-hope you like it. |
| #26johnthedm7000Feb 10, 2009 13:18:34 | Added another tainted feat, this one based only only general depravity that provides a reactive defense against will-based attacks. I also added a new mental symptom, that may cause one afflicted with it to lose their ability to have an internal monologue. Thank you for the compliment Zertatulcraft-it's high praise knowing that my taint symptoms have the same sort of tone as something coming from a White Wolf product. |
| #27zeratulcraftFeb 10, 2009 15:37:44 | Ooh I like those feats, though I'm not sure about Corruption Caller using the lower of your Str/Con mods. It's only on an action point, so once every two encounters, and it's only on bite attacks, bite attacks are...not quite as common as they used to be, I believe. So you can probably get away with making it the better of the two scores. Thought of another physical symptom by the way. We've got Extra Eyes and Bulbous Eyes, but what about no eyes? Empty Sockets : Your eyes have shriveled away into nothing, you instead see through sinister glowing points of light. Maybe a negative to Diplomacy and gain Low-Light Vision or something? |
| #28johnthedm7000Feb 10, 2009 21:37:57 | Added a new tainted feat based on the Wrigglers symptom-I'm sort of worried about the balance of it, but I based it on the 15th level wizard spell Bigby's grasping hands. Any critiques would be welcome. Also added dead eyes-for those who wish for their tainted characters to go all-cave dweller. |
| #29johnthedm7000Feb 10, 2009 22:30:30 | Adjusted the damage on the wrigglers to be more fitting for a 15th level daily. After I'm finished with the symptoms and feats, I'm thinking of making a couple of PPs along the lines of the Corrupt Avenger and Tainted Scholar from heroes of horror. |
| #30McnancyFeb 11, 2009 0:44:26 | It works, and I think it's cool, it's just... big, like Incarnum big(ok nothing is Incarnum big, not even Incarnum). I think as long as it does not take up too much game time, it would be an improvment from the old Insanity/Taint system, those always slowed down the game whenever they came up. Can I haz cooky now? |
| #31monzaFeb 11, 2009 1:00:51 | great now has anyone tried them/playtest them yet? looks interesting |
| #32johnthedm7000Feb 11, 2009 17:56:49 | I will be play testing them as soon as I can get together a D&D group (or any sort of role playing group for that matter) in Kent Washington. As for cookies: awesome awesome awesome awesomeNo one else gives out fresh-baked cookies filled with chunks of pure awesome, I guarantee it. Any of the newcomers to this thread have any ideas for further taint feats or symptoms? I want to provide a large amount of material for Tainted PC's to work with. P.S-I know Mc Nancy that the document is rather intimidating, and as you said "big", but I feel like the rules themselves for taint are rather streamlined, while still allowing for a lot of customization. I can only hope that it gets as "big" (on a metaphorical level) as incarnum. As a matter of fact, after I get some playtesting done, along with some more material and some polishing I'd like to submit it to Dragon magazine. |
| #33johnthedm7000Feb 11, 2009 18:40:56 | Abominable Claws (Heroic, Tainted) Prerequisites: Mild Corruption, Claws Symptom Benefits: The Tainted Talons tainted power replaces one of your encounter attack powers. This power must be 3rd level or higher. If you do not have a power of the appropriate level, you may replace the power when you gain it. In addition, your claws gain Brutal 1. Tainted Talons Tainted Attack Your claws drip with disgusting pus and unknowable fluids as you rake them across your opponents body Encounter, Tainted Standard Action, Melee 1 Requirements:You must have nothing in either hand. Target:One creature Attack: Strength, Dexterity or Constitution Vs. AC 2 Attacks Hit: 1d4+Strength modifier damage (if Claws was taken once) or 1d6+Strength modifier damage. (if Claws was taken twice). Plus 5 ongoing poison damage (save ends). Special: When you gain this power, choose Strength, Dexterity or Constitution. This choice determines which ability score you use when making attack rolls with this power. This choice remains throughout your character's life and does not change the power's other effects. Symptom: If you possess the second level of the claws symptom, you inflict 5+ the lower of your strength or constitution modifiers ongoing poison damage (save ends). Delusional Fortitude (Heroic, Tainted) Prerequisites:Mild Depravity, Delusional Symptom Benefits:The Deny the Waking Dream tainted utility power replaces one of your utility powers. In addition the first time during an encounter that you fail a wisdom-based skill check or ability check, you gain 5 temporary hit points. The amount of temporary hit points you gain increases to 10 at 11th level and to 15 at 21st level. Deny The Waking Dream Tainted Utility When faced with an arrow in your shoulder, or a deadly poison coursing through your veins, you simply refuse to believe it is real, and reality is forced to play catch up with your deluded perceptions. Daily, Tainted Immediate Reaction, Personal Trigger:You are hit by an attack Effect:You delay the effects of the attack (which include damage and any conditions that the attack would impose) for one round, with the attack affecting you at the end of your next turn. Symptom:For every level of the Delusional symptom you possess beyond the first, you may delay the effects of the attack for an additional turn. Sustaining this effect takes a minor action. Devourer (Heroic, Tainted) Prerequisites:Mild Corruption, Ravenous symptom Benefits: The Unnatural Feast tainted Utility power replaces one of your Utility powers. This power must be 10th level or higher. If you do not have a power of the appropriate level, you may replace it when you gain it. In addition, you gain a +2 bonus to saves against poison. Unnatural Feast Tainted Utility In an orgy of frenzied consumption, you devour your foes fallen corpse in moments , and the corruption within is pleased. Daily, Tainted Standard Action, Melee 1 Target:One non-construct dead creature of medium size or smaller Effect:Your mouth distends far beyond what is normal for any natural creature, and you quickly strip all flesh from the creature's body. In addition, you gain a +2 bonus to insight checks to see through illusions. Descend into Savagery Tainted Daily When you first scent blood, your facade of civilized normalcy drops, and you become as a ravening beast. Daily, Tainted Immediate Reaction, Personal Trigger: You bloody an enemy Effect: You gain a +4 power bonus to melee damage rolls, athletics checks and perception checks until the end of the encounter or until, at the end of your turn, you are not within 5 squares of a bloodied creature (whichever comes first). Symptom: For every level you possess of the Bestial Mental symptom beyond the first, you gain an additional +1 power bonus to melee damage rolls. |
| #34johnthedm7000Feb 11, 2009 18:42:14 | Added a few more tainted feats, separate from the main body, which has gotten over the maximum size for a single post. Thank you all for your commentary, please tell me if you see anything unbalanced or potentially unfun! |
| #35johnthedm7000Feb 11, 2009 19:48:18 | Added a new tainted feat based on the Ravenous symptom. Hopefully it's somewhat balanced. |
| #36monzaFeb 11, 2009 22:24:13 | why dont you add a spoiler box you could put more on one post? |
| #37johnthedm7000Feb 11, 2009 22:27:09 | I've been trying to figure out some way to add more text to the original post so people don't have to page through 30+ entries on this thread in order to get all of the rules. Anyone have any ideas? |
| #38johnthedm7000Feb 12, 2009 17:40:44 | Added a new tainted feat based off of the Bestial symptom. Trying to come up with a few more mental symptoms and a number of physical ones so we can have some more variety. Any input would be appreciated. |
| #39johnthedm7000Feb 13, 2009 12:35:03 | Sblocked the text on the original post, but it's still limiting me to 5000 characters (apparently it counts sblocked text as well). What I probably should have done is created several posts after the initial one to allow for additional feats and what not. Any who, hopefully it's more readable now. Any comments? |
| #40monzaFeb 14, 2009 12:18:30 | I like it, think I will possibly include it in my campaign, I will tell you the results |
| #41johnthedm7000Feb 15, 2009 14:59:39 | Awesomesauce- if you or your players have any commentary (especially ideas for new symptoms) please tell me! |
| #42Guiltl3ssFeb 16, 2009 22:37:16 | I really like all the ideas about this Taint system, and I do have a small bit to add myself. What I found worked rather well was the system used in Ravenloft. They have a more modern d20 ravenloft sourcebook out there and has a WONDERFUL evil backdrop. It also has rules for Fear and Madness (as well as a Taint system to use them). I like what you have and I think this resource could only better what you've created. ^^ |
| #43johnthedm7000Feb 16, 2009 22:57:30 | What specifically do you think would work well with the system I'm currently developing-I'm always looking for ways to improve it. ![]() by the way awesome awesome |
| #44alyss_dupMar 01, 2009 3:48:25 | While this thread is old news, some may be interested in this: I've done a little editing and made it look nicer, easier to read, etc. My congrats to the author; I was a big fan of taint in 3.5 and this is good stuff. Here's the link. Please note that it's a docx file; if you're not running word 2007 you won't be able to work it. |
| #45johnthedm7000Mar 02, 2009 10:27:44 | Thank you very much Alyss for your formatting (although I can't read the document). Do you happen to have any additional ideas for taint symptoms? |
| #46alyss_dupMar 02, 2009 14:10:29 | Me? **** no I've always been pretty terrible at homebrewing, much as I've tried not to be.I've changed the file to a .doc now, so it should open in all Word versions. |
