Any Codex Alera Campaigns out there???

For those who have read Jim Butcher's Codex Alera novels, I am wondering if you know of anybody whose done the legwork on making a campaign setting out of them...

I'm sort of whipping one up and can't decide if I'll use the White Wolf Storytelling system or the 4th Edition Rules.  I'm obviously leaning strongly toward 4th Edition since it is already high fantasy...

I've got one player who wants to play a Marat warrior with a wolf as his chala (totem).  I'm thinking we can steal liberally from the Shaman (modify the panther style)...

But I'm wondering how to work the Furycrafting powers.  Obviously we can steal Fighter Exploits for Metalcrafters...  Fire Spells for Knights Ignus, etc...

Either way I think I'll be having to write up a lot of new at-wills, dailies, etc.

Any ideas?

I like your taste in books.

I had actually thought about making furycraft a little different in 4e.  I was planning on adapting the previewed rules for psionics as the base.  But then you can run into the difficulty of role.

I had thought about assigning roles to the elements and then pulling appropriate powers for the specific elements

Metal - Defender/Striker

Fire - Controller/Leader(Less Heal and more buff)

Water - Leader

Wood - Striker/Possible controller

Earth - Defender/Possible striker

Air - Striker/Controller

Each depends on how it's applied, I was thinking of having a person pick a role and then they could choose whatever suite of powers fit into that role, and then come up with a multi-class feat to take a new role.

I seem to be rambling but if any of that sounds good to you I am happy to help in whatever way possible.

Wow.  Yeah, role hadn't even entered my mind.  And yeah, I'd love to brainstorm with you:

THE ELEMENTS- main role/secondary role:  details.  Seems we agree on the general roles, just adding my .02 cents.

FIRE- Controller / Leader:  We see a lot of burning armies down and AoE stuff.  We also have great examples of firecraft inspiring allies and making enemies feel fear.  Very cool and leaderish to my mind.

WOOD- Striker / Controller: I say this because of the ability of the woodcrafter to stealth around in natural environments as well as do assassin-type archery with their megabows.  Nature furies seem like they'd be great controllers as well, holding enemies down with hindering terrain and so on.

EARTH- Striker / Defender:  Similar to Wood, but in melee and without the stealth part.  Giant hammers and using the Earth furies to crush and otherwise hold back foes seems very striker/defender to me.  Primarily massive damage, but also potential to harry and stop foes.  That's just combat powers, let's not even get into summoning walls of pure stone via ritual!  LOL.

AIR- Controller / Defender: Very mobile, but it doesn't dish out a lot of damage.  In the books, we see Knights Aeris distracting people a lot and gusting groups of enemies around.  Their initiative and speed bonuses would let them hang in a fight, but they aren't really front-line fighters.  This is a hard one to pin down.

WATER- Leader / Striker:  This is obviously the ONLY true source of magical healing according to book canon as I know it.  So everybody is a healer that chooses this element; it automatically screams leader.  But we've also seen Water just gank people by choking them to death or ripping out their throat with icy ultra-sharp claws...

METAL- Defender / Striker: In other words, we totally agree.  Metalcrafters are the pure soldiers of the elements.  We've seen them pin down and eventually destroy foes over and over again.  When they put their mind to it, they can slice and dice with the best of them, cleaving through metal, stone and flesh.  A striker sub-role is definitely there.

I think overall I might have to de-emphasize role a bit in this game, adjust combat to fit the party.  I say that because the 6 Elements don't fit neatly into the four roles.  And because 4 out of 6 of them seem like strikers to me.  Sorta terrifying, actually.  :D

If you made each element a Class, then let people MC or hybrid into other elements, that might work...

I will think more upon this...

I like your analysis of the elements.

Mostly just bumping this.

In the next few months I would like to see if this can be done, so I would like to see if I can gather some interest and maybe support.

Free-wheeling drive-by thought...

Alera's furies are essentially similar to boons (legendary or divine) as described in DMG2. They provide enhancements to certain skills or abilities, or regularly usable powers.

No idea about balance, but just tossing out some food for thought.
