I have run most of the published adventures from WoTC that culminates in the final battle with Orcus.  It is very well done and has been built up for quite some time.  With a comination of story and mechanics, I think Vecna is the only published monster than could be the capstone of the victory lap.  Does anyone have a better idea or ways to build on the Vecna battle?

A mini campaign based on the end of the 1st set of Adventure modules could work. Vecna and Orcus have both been at odds with the Raven Queen since the inception of 4e, not to mention each other, so Vecna jumping at the chance for power upon the defeat of one of his enemies in his quest to become the lord of all death isn't too far fetched. The conclusion of E3 was pretty open ended, so just interjecting Vecna's evil master plan into the end shouldn't be too hard if you didn't expond upon the PC's victory beyond the adventure module too much.

As for why Vecna would even be fighting, the chance to capture the Raven Queen in a weakened state could be good. Steal her power for himself as Orcus was trying to do, and Vecna would have the means to take her seat as god of death, among his many other titles as a deity.

Although on a personal note, I'd think it more interesting to bring back Nerull for a victory lap. The Raven Queen usurped Nerull for his seat as death god, so his unintentional resurection as a result of Orcus' plans would be a huge curveball that would keep PCs familiar with this history hungry for more.

I'm hoping to run an Orcus battle soon and I'm looking for inspiration.  Do you have a list of the WoTC orcus battles and where I might find them? Also, was their one that you enjoyed more than the others?  Thanks.

I had given up on getting a reply here, and I must say this post was gold.  I think a little of Vecna pulling the strings practically writes itself, but making the focus Nerull would be a wonderful idea.
