I'm curious if anyone has had experience trying a Gestalt system in 4e. If so, can you please share both:

1) How you implemented the system. For instance, did you keep the cap on number of encounter powers and daily powers and simply allow choices between two classes?

2) How did this work out? I know in 3.5 these characters were usually more durable and able to fill multiple roles easier, but the main advantage was seemed to be in giving them longevity. I assume the same would hold true in 4e, but I'd like to hear if anyone has tried.

We experimented with this kind of idea by applying the Elite Class template from the DMG to normal characters.

At third level, we had three characters doing rather well against encounters designed for six characters. We made some higher level characters as well, but didn't play those as much.

Here's the thread where I discussed all of this in more detail.

Gestalt 4th edition is something I've been highly interested in. Though frankly I'm too lazy to balance it and just say "hey pick two classes. K thanks.."

It's a cool idea but the flaw is

A: Classes in 4th edition are very MAD. So you won't be an optimal class unless you pick maybe the same classes as everyone else would for synergy.

B: There's only like, nine classes out so far. Eleven if you count those excellent homebrew psionics that one guy made.. Maybe once Players Handbook 2 comes out and **** I'd see it as a more feesible thing.

Gestalt might be the only way to get James to play fourth edition. He said he wouldn't play after DMing a game of it.

James: It was horrible, my PCs were just barely surviving a goblin attack. The monsters have ridiculous amounts of HP and the system is hokey..

Jim: Well, goblins are stronger in packs.

James: There was two of them!

Jim: Why didn't someone use a daily power?

James: Would you be willing to waste your daily power on goblins?

Ofcourse James is just a whiner. I remember he didn't want to DM us anymore after a 3.5 game...

Jeremiah: Hey James, can we houserule that a soulknife can "meld" his mindblade into a weapon and therefor the damage from both stacks?

James: That doesn't sound particularly broken.. fine..

Jim: How come he can meld but my wilder can't wild surge an entire augment when he manifests a power?!

James: Fine! Anyone else want to play psionics?!

Julz: I do.. and I want the spelltheif varaint where he can steal spells fully augmented...

Later...
Jeremiah: Oh snap look at dat'! My +1 longsword is now a +2 longsword that deals 2d8 damage and has a critical hit score of 18-20 x4! This is awesome!

Jim: Who cares?! I'm just spamming the hell out of mind thrust for 2d10 damage at the cost of one powerpoint!

Julz: I'm a blue mage! I'm a blue mage! Can a buy a gunblade?!
