Ok so I am DMing a party with a dual wielding Fighter who fancies themself an awesome archer and a Ranger Archer who argue all the time over who  is the better archer. How can i set up  an archery contest that wont just be them rolling attacks over and over again? What are some twists, rules or homebrews i could utilize for the competition?

I would devise an encounter, where both enter a forest (seperately?) to hunt down the biggest creature they can and kill it. start of with little things that they can handle, then throw a monster at one of the characters which there is no way he can handle alone. Cue the second character getting involved. Both characters will work together to kill it.

Then you can watch them argue about who ACTUALLY killed the monster.

aha! Ive got a kind of good idea,

it still includes attack rolling tho, but includes a skill challenge incorportated into it.

try this:

Objection
To score more points than your opponent

Setup
A setting (forest, plain with scenery, city)
a number of Numbered targets with an identification marker say (15 targets) (people, birds trees)
Competitors
Judge

General Rules:
1:
Each competitor will be given 15 arrows/bolts with ID markers (red/blue tape) and their weapon
2:they will take place in the aiming line and attempt to find the targets and shoot them before his opponent does.
3: the competitors may not speak to each other during the competition.
4: Once a target has been found and hit by a competitor, the judge will announce "target # claimed by (name) If at any point the other competitor successfuly shots the same target, they recieve a penalty to their score.
5: Once either all targets have been shot, or the time runs out (agree on whether it is a timed even or until all targets are found before beginning)
6: A competitor may not watch his opponent look for, and fire at a target.

Perception Rules
1: Have an equal number of set difficulty DC targets: (IE: 5 Easy DC, 5 Difficult, 5 Extremley difficult)
2: A target shot by a competitor recieves a -2 penalty to the DC

Hitting Rules:
1: Give each target an AC in line with its perception DC, ie: easy seen, easy AC and so on)

Scoring Rules
1: Scale the points for each hit with the difficultly of the DC.
Ie: an easily seen target: 1 point, a difficult to find target: 2 points and so on.
2: If a competitor scores what would be a critical hit, they get a +1 bonus point.
3: Competitors get a +1 bonus point for hitting each target of a set difficulty.
4: Competitors also get a +1 bonus point for hitting 1/3 of the targets, a +3 bonus for hitting 2/3 of the targets and a +5 bonud for hitting and all of the targets.
EDIT:5: When a competitor successfully shots a target claimed by his opponents, he recieves a -3 penalty to his score.

How does that look?
