I've been thinking about creating an arena battle tournament that could be a side-game/mini-quest within existing adventures, providing players with a different kind of challenge in order to provide variety. The idea is to have a bracketed arena fight tournament (a la Roman Gladiator games) that pit player vs. player (or pairings vs. pairings).
I've seen on some other forums that this has been done, but the lack of modifications for the specific roles for D&D (i.e. Striker, Controller, etc.) basically ensure Strikers win 9 times out of 10.
I've proposed the following for my upcoming arena battle:
1. A Braketed, single elimination tournament featuring 32 fighters (or teams of fighters) at level 4. 2. Strikers have access to at-will powers only. 3. Leaders have access to at-will and encounters powers only. 4. Defenders have access to at-will, encounter and daily powers. 5. Controllers have access to at-will, encounter, utility and daily powers. 6. Characters get 1 Action Point for the duration of the tournament. 7. Characters start the tournament with their default number of healing surges, which can be expended as a minor action at any point during a battle (as many times during a battle as a player wants). However, once used, characters cannot regain spent healing surges for the rest of the tournament.
Thoughts? I think this would make PvP or PPvPP battles a lot more even across character roles. With these parameters in place, I don't think Strikers would win by default by any means, and a fun and fast-paced combat tournament could be dropped into existing campaigns for fun! |
