Ashen Covenant Campaign

I've been trying to come up with ideas for a campaign involving the Ashen Covenant, and I decided I'd like to create a campaign where the players are actually members of the Ashen Covenant. I figured that I could start off using some of the ideas in the Ashen Covenant article for adventures, but they would be from the perspective of the cultists instead of the good adventurers.

The other idea I had about this is that once the players hit level 11 (I'd probably start them at level 8 or so), in order to rise in the ranks among the inner circle of the Covenant, they would be required to be transformed into undead. So, in addition to their paragon paths, I thought it would be cool if they were allowed to add one of the undead npc templates to their character. Of course, this would require some slight modification, as some of the powers would be too unbalanced. I figured I would greatly reduce the damage of the Death Knight's Unholy Flames to be 2d10+Con damage. I would change the Lich's Spellmaster to be a daily, and the Vampire Lord's Dominating Gaze to a daily or an encounter as well. Basically anything that is recharge or encounter would be modified to be either a straight encounter ability or a daily. I think I am also going to have to tone down some of the auras, because a bunch of those combined look like they could get pretty crazy pretty fast.

This would make the characters more powerful than the average level 11 character of course, but I figured that as long as the encounters themselves were tuned with that in mind that it wouldn't do much more than add a bit more flavor to the characters.

Any ideas/suggestions to help get me started developing a story, or tuning encounters or the templates better? The options I was thinking about giving them for templates are: Deathknight, Death Master, Demonic Acolyte, Lich, Vampire Lord, and Huecuva (from the Ashen Covenant article).
