I've read all of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Avalon mythos books and in general think they'd make a wonderful campaign world. The early Avalon/Atlantis portion has a high level of magic and a unique theology, while the world gets progressively darker and 'dirtier' as the storyline progresses. The length of time covered (thousands of years) allows for a lot of flexibility in a campaign while still remaining true to the overall background. I've got a list of the books handy (it's on wikipedia too), and after having read some of the stuff Bradley (and Diana Paxson) wrote about her writing that's given me a little more insight into how she saw the world as well. Now, what I ask is: why has no one created a campaign setting before? I was genuinely surprised that I couldn't turn up a single result in my searches. Not that I'm complaining, I was planning to create a setting of my own anyway but it's always nice to have other people's work to reference for inspiration and ideas. Followup - would anyone else even be interested in seeing an Avalon mythos campaign setting? If so, why? What would you like to see? Do you have any ideas? I'd be wonderfully happy if this thread turned into a collaborative effort. |

It uses some elements of the "Avalon" type setting with the unusual magic system and the different religious orders. (there's the following magic using classes--enchantresses, hedge magicians, Christian miracle wielding clergy) Anyway how would you imagine it all working if you did put it together? |

I'm unsure as to whether I'd incorporate the abilities/powers either hinted at or demonstrated in the books as new class abilities, a paragon/epic path, or simply as a new class. All options have merit, but I think the one with the least appeal to me would be simply adding them as new class abilities - it wouldn't seem specialized enough/they'd be treated too common. Things like the abilities of a Priest of Light, a Grey Robe's spells, or the powers of a priestess of Avalon all seem to require a unique character path. Of course the game world would be in Britain. I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'all fitting together' other than that. I do have a general idea of what *I* would make the world look/feel like on the whole, but it's hard to put into words. Adventurers in the setting would probably come from nobility or the ranks of the various priesthoods - hard to do anything else as there isn't much in Bradley's writing about commoners. And then there'd be the realm of Fairy/the shrouding of mist between the worlds. And while 'the Goddess' plays a prominent role in all of the books, there are other enough deities and religious themes throughout to create a theology, as well as a semi-index in a couple of books detailing the roles of characters and deities mentioned in the story. I'll be looking up Pendragon this evening at work, but I haven't heard of it until now. |
