| #1AldiiJun 17, 2009 10:25:59 | Here I plan to make yet another attempt to create a campaign setting with the help of fellow creators. A world that is natural and beliveable, beautiful and terrible. A world that can actually be used in an DnD campaign with the rules in the manual. I realize though that this is a nearly impossible task with rules or without rules. As people always think in different manners and have different ideas on what is good and what is not good. So I will make one simple request if you want to add something to this THINK about it first. Think it through, give your idea some serious time and let your idea be your idea but let it still be a part of the world at large. Each creator should post one or two ideas in each post. Ideas that can easily be used for a DnD campaign and will not stop or hinder any classes from being played as a odd and impractical magical system that is forced upon each and every magician or that ALL deities behave in a certain way. I want this world to be one of many colours, not only of one tone or mood. Well then I hope I have made my vision clear and I hope that this type of setting is something that others would like to contribute to as well. 1. The world is a round orb that rotates around a Sun. Most of the planet is covered with oceans but there is one major landmass, several archipelagos and two landmasses that entirely consists out of ice at each pole. 2. Magic flows throughout the land in invisible streams, rivers and flows. Sometimes it seems to change the world around it and strange stone spires, rifts, chasms, oddly shaped trees and similair things seems to appear out of thin air. Magic is manipulated by gifted individuals who can shape it through his Will and his Word. P.S: The odd language I used in the title is Swedish. The reason to why I did so is simple, I wanted to get attention. |

| #3angelofthenightJun 17, 2009 19:11:12 | 4. The Deep is a massive depression in the floor of Great Ocean. Within The Deep, a huge city inhabited by aquatic Illithids and Aboleths exists. 5. Seven immensely powerful fey preside over the days of the week. They rule from a court, called the Court of Days. Each fey, however, can only influence the Prime Material Plane on his or her day of the week. |
| #4MechaliburJun 17, 2009 19:19:09 | 6. Demons are powerful creatures that are bound within the earth itself as a result of a conflict that occured thousands of years before mortals' existance. They have absolutely no power unless they are summoned. They relish this opportunity because it allows them to spread grief and chaos. |
| #5AldiiJun 18, 2009 3:40:38 | 7.The world is old. Far older then any now living being is. Even the oldest deities, demons or other more strange things can truly remember the days before the world. The world was created by magic though so much is clear, magicians can still feel the traces of the vast amounts of energies that were summoned to wish the world in to existence. 8. Gods in general draw their power not from their worshipper but from their domains. As an example a God that is the personofication of greed may have few devout followers but may still gain power due to the formation of a new, greedy Merchant house. |
| #6TophehJun 18, 2009 5:02:03 | 9. There is a group called the Crystal Bursters that belive that there is only a finite amount of magic in the world, and that the mages are draining it needlessly. They go about trying to destroy mage crystals whenever possible, hence their name. 10. Large bridges once connected the Islands of the Archipelagos, but only a few still exist in their original condition |
| #7subsistcyberJun 18, 2009 5:29:33 | 11. A major trading city, Thyroniin rests in the heart of the "major landmass." The city is protected and maintained by constructs crafted with Genium, a rare metal found only within the city's deep mines. |
| #8AldiiJun 18, 2009 7:00:41 | 12. More then ten thousand years ago in another era there was an Empire. The Infinite Empire of Ara-Herem that managed to impose itself over nearly the whole globe. An empire that was acording to legend ruled by a long line of human Philosopher-Kings that were both known as mighty magicians and skilled architects. They where the discoverers of Genium and the first people that managed to use it as something more then jewelry. Armed with their knowledge the Kings forged massive Golems, war-machines and weaponry out of this valuable metal and in the matter of a mere century the globe was theirs. The Empire ruled for nearly twohundred years but was in the end undone by civil war. Much of what they built is undone, but there are still ancient ruins, bridges and roads that has managed to survive to the present. |
| #9chapienJun 18, 2009 13:48:09 | 13. The gods are immensely distant, and not even angels like to 'dirty themselves' in the company of mortals. |
| #10TophehJun 18, 2009 15:23:18 | 14. The Gods and the Demons fought one another because of a love between a Demon and a Goddess. 15. Devils are the descendants of the offspring of that union. |
| #11MechaliburJun 18, 2009 16:22:16 | 16. Any mortal can become a god, but there can only be a set number of gods. Therefore, a deity must be slain for a mortal to gain that kind of power. |
| #12AldiiJun 18, 2009 17:03:21 | 17. Mortal-born gods tends to be much more intimate with mortals then their ancient colleagues. Especially those that stem from more short-lived races such as humans and halflings tends to behave in this way. This often results in the birth of Half-Celestials. Half-Celestials whose descendants to this day still retain some of their distant ancestors power. These people are often found in governmental offices or ( ironically ) in some rarer cases within temples as clergy. |
| #13chapienJun 19, 2009 3:01:18 | 18. Long ago, dragons and the elves (when the elves, eladrin, and drow were one race) had a great war. The dragons used the dragonborn as their soldiers against the elves, and to this day an enmity exists between the two races. |
| #14MechaliburJun 19, 2009 9:42:19 | 19. During that war, a group of elves fled to the tunnels beneath the earth. While there, they became tainted by the presense of demons, and eventually became the drow. |
| #15chapienJun 19, 2009 12:07:27 | 20. In the conclusion of the war, a group of elven wizards decided that the world was a terrible place and that they should best seek out a new home. These elves discovered the Feywild, and moved into the Feywild with some elven groups of similar beliefs. Eventually the power of the Feywild turned them into the eladrin they are now. |
| #16AldiiJun 19, 2009 13:24:27 | 21. At the end of the war the Dragons were victorious. Large parts of the land of the Elves was burnt to sinders by the victorious overlords and the Elves fled northwards. The Dragonborn rebelled against their Draconic masters and due to excellent leadership, superior numbers and an alliance with a vengeful cadre of Elven Archmages they managed to beat the Dragons. Shortly thereafter the Dragonborn betrayed the Elves, killed their magicians and occupied the Elven lands. |
| #17yellowdingoJun 19, 2009 14:46:38 | 22. The Thearchy of Aine: A viking clanhold of Titans whose god rules directly as an Avatar (a giant Stone Golem standing astride the river that cuts up from the sea through their land). The land it self is divided amongst the families who are feuding except in times of war when they all put to sea in a single Viking Ship the size of an Ocean Liner). |
| #18chapienJun 19, 2009 14:57:46 | 23. The elves now who did not flee underground or into the Feywild now live in forests scattered across the world. Elves are now nomadic groups who distrust all other races, warning them to leave their territory. However, should a Dragonborn enter the area an elf group travels in, they will kill the said Dragonborn without mercy. 24. The first of the races were the dwarves, created by Grimmdorin the Soulforger. Grimmdorin made them as the protectors of all good races, and taught them how to build mighty mountain fortresses. In his jealousy, the evil god Murgelym created the giants, goblins, and orcs deep beneath the earth and unleashed them into the dwarven strongholds. The dwarven numbers became few, and only a few scattered strongholds survived. The dwarves yearn to fulfill their charge, but cannot now. Due to this fact, the dwarves still despise all Orcs, goblins, and giants. |
| #19AldiiJun 19, 2009 16:50:59 | 25. Life was not created by the gods, life was there when the first God opened his eyes and gazed out over creation. The first gods instead created new forms of life through experimentation with the tiny organisms they found as they began to explore this strange new world. 26. The Dragonborn rule and live within the vast Empire of Urunn. It was named after Urunn Manheart, the leader of the rebellion that gave the Dragon-born independence from their ancient masters. The empire cover much of the north-western parts of the continent and consist mainly of mountainous terrain, forests and swamp-lands. |
| #20TophehJun 20, 2009 0:21:53 | 27. During the Dragonborn rebellion, the Dragons attempted to create more... subservient soldiers, and created the Warforged. Although the war is long over, to this day, Dragonborn harbor significant reservations about new, untested technology |
| #21chapienJun 20, 2009 2:19:57 | 28. A certain group of dwarves, those of the Goldhammer Clan, were charged in ages past with a secret task. Beneath the mighty Goldhammer Citadel lies the prison of the mightiest demon in existence, and it is here that the gods chose to imprison it. The dwarves guard the demon, making sure nothing allows it to escape. None know of their secret charge except for themselves, not even other dwarves know. |
| #22AldiiJun 20, 2009 4:27:43 | 29. Dragonborns were created originally by chromatic Dragons through inter-breeding with primitive human tribes. The children were taken away by their Dragonic parents and throughout magic they were changed to become more dragon-like. Kobolds were created in the same way but throughout inter-breeding with Goblinoids. 30. Due to the rebellion against their Draconic ancestors, the reasons to why they did so and the many lives that was claimed in the process the Dragonborn tends to look at their Draconic ancestry with disgust. Dragons are hated and despised by most Dragonborn. Suprisingly this has resulted in the formation of the cult of Man. A religous and philosophical institution within Urunn. It is a cult that venerates humanity and whose members throughout breeding, religous faith, magic and behaviour tries to abandon their barbaric Dragonic heresy and instead try to embrace their humanity. The cult is ancient and is popular amongst both noblefolk and commonfolk alike. |
| #23TophehJun 20, 2009 6:44:43 | 31. Despite their appearance, Tieflings have nothing to do with Devils or Demons. Rather, it is a recessive genetic variant which exists at very low levels in the human population. Millennia ago, the Tief tribe undertook a centuries-long breeding project by expressly finding and breeding these then unnamed Tieflings together to form what they considered to be a 'superior' caste of humanity. |
| #24chapienJun 20, 2009 7:01:03 | 32. Metallic Dragons are largely misunderstood. The Dragonborn dispise them, and the elves fear them. However, they had nothing to do with the creation of the Dragonborn or the war between the dragons and elves. They were created by the gods to guard the world against evil when the dwarves failed in their charge. |
| #25AldiiJun 20, 2009 7:27:04 | 33. A group of ancient chromatic Dragons, some of the old enough to have been involved in the "Great Draconic War", rules over the wealthy eastern inland kingdom Urtusi. It is mainly inhabited by humans, kobolds and a small elite of treacherous Dragonborn. The kingdom is traditionally ruled by a figuredhead monarch that is elected by the true power behind the throne, The Council of Wyrms. The Council of Wyrms consists of five of the oldest and most powerful Dragons in the whole east. The Council meets at least once per year, votes on the affairs of the kingdom and similair things. The kingdom harbors about fifty dragons other then the council members though most of them spawns of the Council members. The kingdom is fairly militaristic and is considered a threat by most neighbouring nations. |
| #26chapienJun 20, 2009 7:36:38 | 34. Although how the world came into being is a mystery, one mad cult, the Cult of the Enroaching Doom, believes that their god created the world. They believe that because of the other gods, the world has been corrupted, and thus must be destroyed. |
| #27AldiiJun 20, 2009 7:41:59 | Could you please write something else? I had already written that no one knows who created the world, that it is a mystery. It feels like it destroys the feeling of that we do this together if someone destroys someone elses idea. |
| #28chapienJun 20, 2009 8:05:47 | Could you please write something else? I had already written that no one knows who created the world, that it is a mystery. It feels like it destroys the feeling of that we do this together if someone destroys someone elses idea. Alright! |
| #29subsistcyberJun 20, 2009 8:19:32 | 35. The Tief tribe now resides far to the South in the Great Taruith Desert where they flourish in giant cities and control the flow of the world's current slave trade. One "pureblood" is chosen each century in an ancient and secret ritual. |
| #30AldiiJun 20, 2009 8:39:38 | 37. Humanity is probably one of the most widespread races and can be found in most if not every nation ( Often as rulers ) on the continent. They are not natives of the continent though but arrived there several millenias ago as refugees when their native island archipelago sunk due to a particulary savage earthquake. |
| #31MechaliburJun 20, 2009 9:32:13 | 38. Black Lotuses are incredibly rare flowers with strange properties. It can be used as a panacea that can remove practically any disease, but it causes the person who picked the Lotus to die within 24 hours of using the flower. |
| #32AldiiJun 20, 2009 13:58:47 | 39. The kingdom of the Tieflings is known as Tiefier Ubur and control enough land to support three major cities. This kingdom is positoned on the southwestern coast of the continent and rules largerly over arid and hilly terrian. The cities are mainly inhabited by humans and slaves while the Tieflings act as the ruling elite. Ordinary humans can be a part of the military and work with everything from shopowners to construction workers. Though only Tieflings are allowed to work with law, magic, bankery and several other more prestigous lines of work. Of some odd reason sexism is nearly non-existent within Tiefier Ubur and women are commonly found at even the highest and most important jobs. |
| #33GrimbusJun 21, 2009 4:14:45 | A distant Island, far out to sea is inhabited by a god. The god was exiled here, or decided to distance himself from the other gods. The island is populated by this gods own creations. Nobody has returned from this Islands, sane. |
| #34TophehJun 24, 2009 17:38:03 | 41. The icecaps at the north and south pole hide entrances to the Chillscape, an icy realm of the dead. There, the spirits carve beautiful sculptures in the ice, but few mortals have seen them, as the Chillscape is not hospitable to mortal bodies. 42. Deep within the chillscape, a cabal of Liches alternately cooperates with and schemes against each other in an attempt to raise one of their undead bodies to Godhood. |
