Within the festival there are three contests. One is a fighting challenge (I know what I am going to do with this), another is gambling tourney, and the last is a performace (Singing, story telling, or somthing around this lines). I forget what the S.C.A. Calls there bardic contestes, but I would like to have it like that if someone knows what I am talking about. More than likly I am going to run this as a skill challenge. I am just wondering if anyone has done anything like this and how it went. |

I did an impromtu poetry contest once (being an english lit graduate, the idea appealed to me) but obviously since I was the only one with such a degree I merely rewarded them on how much they made the table laugh.* But you can disguise it with fake dice rolls if you like. GM's prerogative and all that. Much more fun. I understand you have new players, but what better way to introduce them to the bizarre craziness of a P&P RPG than something like this? They can watch, though, if they really want to step out of the proceedings or find too embarrassing until their more comfortable with the group. Don't force 'em (and do this bit last, calming them down with regular play) and you'll be okay (probably~ obviously I can't guarantee... :D) *= EDIT, in case you're interested, one guys poem about a drow and his crack and his exploits with a duck won the contest. And yes, my players then were immature, but hell, I giggled a bit, so whatever... :D |

This allows players who don't want to participate over the table (for example your new players) to be a part of the fun and the event without having to make fools of themselves. Then give players benefits, or allow them to take 10 or even 20 (an ad lib to the rules, but hey this whole thing is supposed to be fun anyway) on their checks. This will encourage people to be involved, while still having the characters skill's represented and also allows people who don't want to be involved as players still have their characters be involved. As for skill checks, remember that this would be a skill challenge that the players themselves create so that could also be fun. Imagine the players building something on stage (dungeoneering) then dancing and climbing up it (athletics or acrobatics) while belting a song and telling jokes (diplomacy or bluff)? Now imagine all the hijinks possible for failure or, god forbid, 1s or 20s get rolled. Let your players decide what happens when such things crop up if they want to. You can have a memorable scene and have it be a skill challenge. So use the sandbox method. Give your players options for how to do this and let them do what they want. It will be fun regardless and the players will get to do what they want to do and no one will feel left out because they are shy or lacking in the sort of imagination that grants the ability to improv. Thats my opinion. |

I think belting a song would simply be known as a charisma check, and as for that, what happened to the preformance skill from 3.5? |
