Alright, incase you don't already know I'm working on a campaign setting. I've got the geography, major nations, tech, and even the cosmology down. I've also got a short summary of the different races in my world. Except for the two small races: Gnomes and halflings.

Now keep in mind that my campaign is set in an advanced world with Pseudo-WWII technology and some steampunk flavoring (think Golden Compass meets Fallout), so this may impact things. I'm wanting to do something unique with them, but I've honestly never cared that much for either them. I could always not include them as playable races, but I'm not one for doing that. I'm fine with making gnomes tinkers, but I want to do something that's not just throwing them in with other civilizations (particularly the halflings, gnomes can assimilate if push comes to shove).

So the question is: How would you incorporate halflings and gnomes into a world of floating islands and airships?

Gnomes can be like gremlins. Living inside of machinery, elusive engine-spirits.

Halflings can be scavengers, who eke out a meager existence by looting the ruins of other races. Think Mad Max style survivalists who make houses out of broken jeeps and stuff.

In my game world Halflings and Gnomes are two branches of the same race, and both are the result of elf-dwarf interbreeding in ages past. The dwarf gods were very offended at this, and altered dwarf reproduction process (and female dwarf appearance) to prevent it from happening again in the future.

That said, it may help if we know how you explained elves, dwarves, etc...

Ooh, I really like your idea, Space Dragon. I think I'll steal those if you don't mind. Thanks for the input!

keeping their origins similar to 4e gnomes, you could make them angry eco-terrorists, offended by what modern "technology" has done to the forests and the feywild. Halflings, being small, can work with technology better, and in small places. They could operate in the same area that industrial revolution era children occupied, working in mines and sweat shops in lieu of the bigger races. In some areas they could be slaves, in others free people. They could also be chimney sweeps. (chim chiminee chim chiminee chim chim cheree, a sweep is as lucky, as lucky can be...)
