Blackouts in a Campaign

So first some background: I'm running a solo 3.5 Forgotten Realms campaign. The protagonist is a slightly augmented paladin. When the Paladin is a sufficiently high level, I was thinking of having them lead an attack on one of the Hells. This would be the end of a campaign with the PC finally meeting the BBEG. The PC would step through the portal with his gathered forces of good and light, except that the devils (or demons?) are waiting for them. An epic battle ensues worthy of a long and hard fought campaign. But the PC's side ends up losing. So here's my question:

If the Paladin decides to make a heroic stand and allow his allies to escape, he will die. But should this be the end? Is it workable to have the PC reborn as an Angel, Archon, or other similar being of good? Or does he end up in Elysium? Or does he wake up an unknown (to him) amount of time later, a few levels more advanced, in a strange and possibly hostile situation? This is the blackout that the title is referring to. Is this sort of thing workable? and if yes, how would you incorporate it?

Note: the PC is currently level 2, so there is a lot of time to plan and prepare for this
