| #1king_nateMar 21, 2009 13:17:11 | I had originally created the boomerang in this thread. I still like the weapon and now that there are these feats to specialize in weapons I thought I would try to use feats to get a better boomerang. PEACH Superior Range One-Handed Weapon Boomerang Prof. +2 Dam. d4 Range 10/20 Cost: 1ep Weight 1/2lb Group: Light blade Properties: Light thrown Boomerang Training Prerequisites: Dex 13, any martial class Benefit: You gain proficiency with the Boomerang. You increase the boomerang’s range to 15/30, and you treat a boomerang as a brutal (1) weapon. At the end of your on a missed ranged attack roll with the boomerang, you can make the boomerang return to the original square it was thrown from and catch it as a free action. If you are a rogue, you can use the boomerang with the Sneak Attack class feature and any rogue ranged attack power that can be used with a crossbow or sling. Boomerang Novice Prerequisites: Boomerang Training, 4th level. Benefit: You can swap one 3rd level or higher encounter attack power you know for the (no name1) power

| #2Crimson_ConcertoMar 21, 2009 14:22:57 | Superior Melee One-Handed Weapon Why do you have the boomerang listed as a melee weapon instead of a ranged weapon? ![]() Group: Light blade What? I'm pretty sure boomerangs are a bludgeoning kind of weapon. I'm pretty sure they're mostly considered slightly modified clubs, so I'd go with the Mace weapon group myself... Boomerang Training [ A ] This is very not useful. The least magical magic boomerang will do this automatically. [ B ] If they were Light Blades, Rogues could already use them like this. If you go with my recommendation to make them Maces, though, this is a good idea, yes. I'm really not a good judge of power balance, so I don't feel qualified to critique the rest. ![]() |
| #3doneisiMar 21, 2009 17:07:02 | Boomerang training should be labeled as a Multiclass feat. The boomerang should have a +3 proficiency bonus. Even with the +3 it seems rather weak for a superior weapon. Actually with a +3 proficiency it would be exactly like a shuriken with more range... Perhaps +3 and 1d6 instead so it would be the same a shurikien in the hands of a rouge but more range. |
| #4wyld_mutationMar 21, 2009 17:41:49 | I'd go... +2, 1d6 Boomerang Expert should just read... "Until tyhe end of the turn you do not need line of Effect when making an attack with a Boomerang. If you make an attack without line of effect the weapon does not return to you." |
| #5king_nateMar 22, 2009 4:36:15 | Why do you have the boomerang listed as a melee weapon instead of a ranged weapon? because that is a typo…fixed. What? I'm pretty sure boomerangs are a bludgeoning kind of weapon. I'm pretty sure they're mostly considered slightly modified clubs, so I'd go with the Mace weapon group myself... I am inclined to go with Mace group myself but by looking at the definitions in the PHB for Mace and Light Blade, it would appear to me that the boomerang is actually a light blade weapon rewards accuracy as much as force, while the mace are weapons with heavier head than handles which the boomerang does not have. [ A ] This is very not useful. The least magical magic boomerang will do this automatically. [A] This has been a debate on the boomerang since the very beginning when I first created it. Initially I allowed anyone proficient with it to return it when thrown. The idea is that a non-magical boomerang will return unlike any other non-magical weapon. While this is good in the early part of the game before you get a magical boomerang it appears that it is at a disadvantage of losing a property by becoming magical. To offset this, the boomerang actually has the best range out of any other thrown weapon. So people would actually want the boomerang for its range and not for its returning property, making the return property a benefit in the early game while having a long range magical throw weapon in the later game. [b] Being the sleepy person I was when I wrote this piece I had looked at the blowgun for inspiration for the boomerang. I’m still on the fence with the light blade/mace debate so I tossed this in there if I decided to go with mace. I'm really not a good judge of power balance, so I don't feel qualified to critique the rest. Thanks for the help you’ve given so far. Boomerang training should be labeled as a Multiclass feat. Yeah, this is suppose to be a multiclass feat, something I overlooked to type in there during my sleepy state and figured it was obvious that it was going to be a multiclass feat like the other weapon style feats similar to it. I don’t see why the boomerang should have a +3 proficiency bonus. I went with +2 because the boomerang isn’t the easiest weapon to use even in the hands of an professional and also because I don’t want the weapon to be exactly like a shuriken with more range. I don’t want to make a weapon that will make other weapons seem obsolete. I had to find a balance between all thrown weapons and the boomerang and a +2 1d4 seems to be the best balance. Not to mention I think it is more accurate. Boomerang Expert should just read... "Until tyhe end of the turn you do not need line of Effect when making an attack with a Boomerang. If you make an attack without line of effect the weapon does not return to you." Good, this was one of the main things I was looking for help with. This makes more sense thanks. |
