|
| #2king_nateSep 29, 2008 9:03:30 | After some feed back at ENworld we've come up with this so far... Superior One-Handed Ranged Weapon Boomerang Prof.: +2 Damage: d4 Range: (SEE BELOW) Price: 1gp Weight: 1/2lb. Group: Light Blade Properties: Light Thrown, Returning Returning: On a missed attack roll, a proficient user can make the boomerang return to the original square it was thrown from, at the end of their turn. If the user has a hand free, they may catch the boomerang as a free action. Range is still being determined. Currently we are at 10/20 but I found on wiki that a boomerang distance is between 25 and 40 yards which is about 3-5 squares in D&D. So some other options is either a 3/6 or 4/8. What do you guys think? |
| #3sillenSep 29, 2008 11:04:17 | Well...I'd say 5/10 range is okay, thats what other thrown weapons are except the javelin. It's a nice effort, but it seems that any magical thrown weapon would be much better, and thus making this somewhat redundant. Cool for low/no magic campains though. |
| #4blu_skreemSep 29, 2008 12:08:21 | I was really hoping for a Boomerang in the AV, but this seems rather reasonable. I'd go with 5/10 myself as well, just to make it easier to remember. |
| #5king_nateSep 29, 2008 12:22:45 | their distance is on average between 25 and 40 yards which equals 3-5 squares in D&D OPPS, I made a mistake with my math. 25 yards is equal to 75 feet which equals 15 squares 40 yards is equal to 120 feet which equals 24 squares 15/30 looks to be the correct distance. How about this update? Superior One-Handed Ranged Weapon Boomerang Prof.: +2 Damage: 1d6 Range: 15/30 Price: 1gp Weight: 1/2lb. Group: Light Blade Properties: Light Thrown, Returning Returning: On a missed attack roll, a proficient user can make the thrown weapon return to the original square it was thrown from, at the end of their turn. If the user has a hand free, they may catch the weapon as a free action. A non-magical boomerang can only return if it misses it's target, a magical one returns even if it hits. The return ability isn't very powerful but there isn't anyway you can make the boomerang without it I don't think. |
| #6king_nateSep 29, 2008 22:15:24 | Superior One-Handed Ranged Weapon After a few hours of thinking about this I think the Boomerang is too powerful like this so I want to drop the damage to 1d3. This will make the nonmagical boomerang do less damage than a shuriken and throwing axe, and a lower prof. bonus than a shuriken but have the advantage of range and returning. A magical boomerang compared to a shuriken and throwing axe will only have the advantage of range which think is a fair trade off. What do you think? Here's the update: Superior One-Handed Ranged Weapon Boomerang Prof.: +2 Damage: 1d3 Range: 15/30 Price: 1gp Weight: 1/2lb. Group: Light Blade Properties: Light Thrown, Returning Returning: On a missed attack roll, a proficient user can make the thrown weapon return to the original square it was thrown from, at the end of their turn. If the user has a hand free, they may catch the weapon as a free action. |
| #7king_nateSep 30, 2008 2:22:22 | Like I said before, I wasn't sure if to make it a military or superior weapon. I took a closer look at the classes and feats to determine if the boomerang should be military or superior and I'm now convinced that it should be military. As a couple of other options you could have: Rogues and Wizards from a certain region of the world replace Shuriken and quarterstaff with boomerang and even replace that rouges weapon talent ability of increasing the damage die with a Shuriken with increasing the damage die with a boomerang. Or just add Boomerang to the Rouges and Wizards starting weapon proficiencies, I highly doubt that it would break the game. So here is yet another (and hopfully last) update to the boomerang; Military One-Handed Ranged Weapon Boomerang Prof.: +2 Damage: 1d3 Range: 15/30 Price: 1gp Weight: 1/2lb. | #9king_nateOct 01, 2008 0:00:24 | replace "returning" with "boomeranging" This would cause all kinds of problems in the game. Esp. if you use a power with the boomerang that deals any kind of damage on a miss attack. Returning is alright because it gives the weapon a little something while nonmagical without being too time consuming or complicated (I'm looking at you Brutal). better, imo. and make it a superior weapon. This whole superior weapon/military weapon debate is making my head hurt. As a military weapon you've had some training with the weapon and know how to use it. I think that fits the boomerang better than superior which has a seprate training just for that weapon. Would you want to spend a feat in order to get a superior weapon that you get a +2 pro and 1d3 damage? So in a generic D&D setting I believe the boomerang should be a military weapon. With that said, I'm thinking of making it a superior weapon in my campaign. Characters from a certain region in my world would get the boomerang as a free feat while the weapon is pretty much unknown to the rest of the world. With this I would do the Rouge and Wizard ideas mention earlier in the post as well. |

Returning is alright because it gives the weapon a little something while nonmagical without being too time consuming or complicated (I'm looking at you Brutal). even on a power with a miss effect you're getting one basic attack at a -2 penalty. and you have to use a feat to become proficient (since it's superior). the extra attack on a miss would make it an interesting weapon possibly worth taking a feat for. 1d3 damage and returning isn't worth using the item even if it's martial, a +1 dagger isn't that hard to come by and having a dozen non-magical daggers and quick-draw is still better. |
