Brainstorm an encounter: giant vault

The characters in my campaign are in an adventure where they go through doors that pull them into rooms where they have to pick the correct door among a few possible choices.  Ultimately, all of the encounters together represent a larger skill challenge.  Success or failure on the larger skill challenge is determined by the players picking the right door, and the right door in each particular encounter is hinted at within the encounter itself.

In this particular encounter the characters have emerged onto a large stone platform hanging from the ceiling by chains in a huge cavernous vault.  The only light they have is from the cavern entrance and the light that they, themselves, bring with them.  I am not a good artist, but here is a picture:

In the darkness that surrounds the characters are large flying creatures that are repulsed by the light.  The platforms are too far apart for the characters to simply jump to them and so the obvious solution is for the characters to grab hold of the creatures and ride them to the correct platform.  I am planning on hinting (through skill rolls, etc.) that the creatures will be more likely to come to the characters if they turn out their lights, but I'm a little shaky on what I think the characters could, or should, do to draw the creatures in.  What I'm kind of looking for is the kind of courses of actions that I should set my players up to be able to take in order to draw in the creatures (I call them Umbergaunts).

Also, as this is a choice of the "correct" door (each platform has a trap door set in it), I'm loooking for ideas about clues that I can place around to hint to the characters which platform they should steer towards.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I think the scene is sort of epic and my ideas about it just don't seem to live up to the potential of the encounter.

Are these creatures domesticated or wild? I assume they are somewhat domesticated if you expect your characters to be able to ride them.

If they are domesticated you can have the characters lure them in by speaking the correct langue (If goblins domesticated the creatures, then goblin woudl attract them for example).
Meat would attact them.
Perhaps a handle animal check as well.

hmmm... also if the platforms are suspended on chains, the PC's should be able to swing them, hopefully getting close enough to jump over. (As an alternative route to take in case the flying creatures aren't thought of)

The correct door could be shown by traffic patterns, perhaps a door has more footprints in the dust, or perhaps footprints leading away from the door.

Perhaps bones from those who picked the wrong door are scattered around the platform.

runes with cryptic messages are always good.

You could make "hint" the right door at the players by letting them roll a skill check. Otherwise you might as well just let em guess. Maybe a tracking check to notice the path others have taken? Could there be light coming from through that door? Did someone perhaps loose a shoe?

Then again you can always use a speak to rocks spell. Dorothy did it in Return to Oz (were all in agreement right? ~ Dorothy is some sort of planer excursion druid, jack, scarecrow, and tin man are constructs, and toto, Billina, the lion, and the gump are her animal companions? ~ right? ), and the players could use a number of divination spells to get a lead on which is the right door.

Oh! Idea! So they are warned by a talking prophetic bird (ala the Hobbit) that there is a special stone formation near the right path (spot check to find the dragon's eye) and then in the dungeon they may or may not be able to identify the "dragon's eye" stone on the wall? Hmmm.. its a thought, maybe something better than dragon's eye - like falcon's head...

Perhaps the walls are covered with ancient paintings and statues!? Successful language check and decipher "this way to xxx" and "this way to zzz"

I'd vote for that.

So, two things.  First, the players have Hand of Fate as a ritual.  Just something to think about.  And Second, the whole thing is likely to be done in low light, so that might make doing spotting thigns on distant platforms sort of difficult (though that might make a light coming from the right portal more interesting, especially if it is simmultaneously driving away the umbergaunts).  I do, however, love all the ways of getting the umbergaunts down.  Let's say they are domesticated by Deep Gnomes, so what is that, Undercommon, Gnome.  I could put some writing around on the platforms.  The characters have the Comprehend Language ritual.  This might make the skill challenge a little more arcane heavy than it was previously, but that's fine.  I think it was favoring high athletics a bit too much before.
