The setting uses a web of systems (the map is relational, not literal: a collection of circles with lines connecting them) with systems connected by Point-A-Only-To-Point-B-Only jump gates (the smallest ships that can make their own jump point are over 30km long and not commercially viable for fun, small transport). The first campaign arc used a single 'cluster' of worlds, deep into space (a frontier area), but the second and third arcs will use older more developed worlds. I am looking to tap into the group mind for some thematic system names to generate a broad feeling for the setting (lots of system and planet names out there). Examples of stuff I already have come up with: Odin system - Planets Loki, Odin (satellites Huginn and Muninn), Balder, Freyja, Thor (a gas giant with major satellites Sif and Mjolnir), etc. Lakota system - Planets Sitting Bull, Weldon, Crow Foot, Little Bighorn, Dakota (etc). If folks here find it fun, I could use a near-infinite number of these little blurbs just to add color to maps, etc. I'd like to hear your ideas for these. |

On a side note have you seen the teaser trailer for the proposed television show "Slingers" with John Pertwee? It is described as Firefly meets Oceans 11. For system/planet names, you already have norse and native american. Going along with that theme, how about other ethnic based systems (perhaps based on the make-up of the inhabitants/settlers.) Hindu: Agni, Shiva, Ganges, Kali, Yama, Ganesh, Karma British: Piccadilly, Mountbatten, Churchill, Windsor, Tintagel, Land's End African: Idjidja, Mirablesse, Swahili, Anansi, Zulu, Maasai Etc. |

A spatting of examples: Aurifera, Excelsior, Idoneitas, Mendax, Solemnis All of which could have some meaning related to the system. (Wiktionary is a favorite naming resource of mine. Lists and categories at the bottom of pages are your friend: for instance, Latin Adjectives.) Historically, Shakespearean names comprise some of our planetary items. Like as not, names like Cordelia, Ophelia, Hermia, Titania are already extant in our solar system. |

Jupiter, king of the gods, and the largest planet in the solar system. So on and so forth. A lot of stars, though, are given Arabic names. Rigel, for example, or Betelgeuse. As Humanity expands to the stars, though, I expect a lot more mythological names to begin cropping up. H. Beam Piper, for example, seems to have given names from Sumerian and Norse mythology, which made for some pretty cool planet names. |
