I've been DMing for two years and even though much of my campaign setting is fleshed out, sometimes I feel like I missed the smaller histories in order to focus on the larger histories (abysmal invasion, creation, death of a god, etc.) Also, since I've taken a sabbatical from DMing, long boring story, I thought it would be nice to write out some useless details my players may never see! :D oh yeah, I'm that kinda DM lol

Really, I'm just looking for ideas for my short stories. For any responders interested, try to include a protagonist, an antagonist, an obstacle for the hero to overcome (optional), and the type of story it should be (comedy, tragedy, etc.) So bring on the coolest, darkest, craziest, or weirdest topics you can think of. Cheers.

The protagonist is a dragon (at least currently), the antagonist is a knight (at least currently). There is also a princess, the sister of the knight (supposedly), but not necessarily an antagonist herself. Perhaps she is also a witch. The obstacle is one of identity, and the "real" antagonist is not a dragon. It could be a romance.

I am one of those types of DMs as well. I will write NPC intricate histories for people the PCs run into once. Give names and backstories for places the PCs only ever hear of. And determine the current galactic alignment based on the agendas of the deities of whom the PCs have no direct interaction with. So I know how you feel.

One fun exercise I like to do is give places where the PCs frequent layers of history usually two or three, it really helps to shape the landscape and region. Like I may write the area the PCs are in had a foundation of ancient egypt, was decimated by a plague where mongol type tribes of monsterous humanoids roamed for 1000 years and now because of a mighty insurgence from a good aligned cleric so now the country is a loose theocracy with rigid laws and customs, where monsterous humanoids plot often ravage the cities in the background will be many deserted or cursed ruins that hold ancient mysteries.

Many times if I am more interested in the social past instead of like architecture of a certain area. I will write rumors, legends and the like about ancient heroes. Do Herculean esque legends, or rumors of a great hero disappearing waiting for the day she is needed again to return, or write fable about deeds of heroes designed to teach morals.

"The little girl Rojo who tended sheep in a forest when a wolf came upon her flock and begged her for a sheep as he was starving, and she yelled and screamed until the villagers came and chased the wolf off. The wolf came back the following day begging Rojo for a sheep as he was even hungrier than the day before, until she yelled and screamed until the villagers came and chased the wolf away. Her father who was a very wise man gave her a silver dagger to protect herself and taught her how to use it. So she waited for the wolf, but instead a man came without clothing on who begged Rojo for one of her sheep so he could make some warm clothes. She stabbed the man with her silver dagger killing him. And the wolf was never seen again. Moral of the story: The best kind of protection is self-reliance, also never trust a naked man after you've encountered a talking wolf, as he may be a werewolf."
