I love tricksy shapeshifting tactics and all the fun that goes with being able to assume a clever disguise at the drop of a hat. The trouble with changelings, though, is that the only thing that changes is the changeling. It makes it really hard to convince the guard that the half-orc in the alley isn't the changeling con artist he was chasing when the half-orc is wearing her clothes. Okay, magical problem, magical solution. Problem is, there is no suitable magical solution. The only way (of which I'm aware) to have this kind of wardrobe malleability in 4e is to wear a Hat of Disguise, which wholly obviates being a changeling in the first place! There was a decent solution in 3e; shiftweave. Shiftweave was a magical garment that had six pre-set outfits that it could change into. It cost 500 gold and it gave changelings a lot of options. I had really been hoping that shiftweave would make it into the 4e treatment of the Eberron campaign setting, but alas, it did not. As I would still like to use it, though, I'd like to ask you fine homebrewers' input on what the 4e wondrous item should look like. I was thinking a level 5 wondrous item that allows a Hat of Disguise level of control over wardrobe only. Any outfit you can think of, minor action. What do you think? I was also contemplating making it an armor property for any type of armor (I know there's an armor that changes into robes or rags, but it's only for heavy armors). Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. |

I wanted a similar solution for my Changeling character as well. I proposed a simple solution to my DM. Take the property of Imposter's Armor and apply it to light armor; in my case, leather armor. Then I just changed the name to Glamoured Armor. Heck, you could call it Shiftweave for your game and keep the name that you like. A little change of flavor can go a long ways. Also, the other thing about Imposter's Armor is that it's not limited to just robes or rags, but any manner of clothing. I hope that helps. |

I read the line 'You can transform this armor into a normal-looking set of clothes.' as the set of clothes being singular and predetermined. I can see now how it could be interpreted as the effect I'm looking for. Niftycool. I hope that helps. It does. Thanks. ![]() |
