Building a 3 floor temple - stuck on design

The players happen upon a long-forgotten temple. The god who once watched over it has been "divided" if you will, with his power split between the various regions. In this temple is a piece of the god that he willingly gave up, and set it at the top of his temple. The temple has since been taken over by the forces of rival gods that have sworn allegiance to the super-mega BBEG adn his host.

Each of the 3 floors will be inhabited by a different god. What I'm stuck on is ideas for what each floor would have originally contained. The first one would likely have been used for public services; worship, healing, and the like. The second one... I have no idea. The third will be a large, ornate area with various wards and traps protecting the esence.

I can wing the 1st one easily enough, and the 3rd one will come together in time. The big one I can't decide on is the 2nd floor. What on earth would such a temple have squashed between the general public and such a sacred place?

Another thing I wouldn't mind feedback on is a variety of traps/skill challenges for them on floors 1 and 2. I have some ideas for traps set up by the intruders, but what sort of challenges would be found in such a temple?

I figured out the first floor: it is held by the ice elementals. The main area is blocked off by an unnatural sheet of ice, which can only be passed through by wielding an amulet held by the 6 of the lieutenants. When they first enter, one of them is watching the temple's entrance, and flees through the ice as soon as he sees them (hinting to them that they each need an amulet like his).

Now it's a matter of making each lieutenant's encounter unique. I have one planned out, where they see his body lying dead on the opposite end of the room. The room itself holds a sacred relic (possibly some magic items for the players), and is guarded with numerous traps. I'm not sure what traps right now, but it's a start.

What about the others? I figured I'd have a few encounters in the various rooms (I'm thinking one in the infirmary, where he is aided by some blood demons). Any ideas for another skill challenge, or a unique terrain battle I could do?

The second floor could be living quarters. Those priest have to live somewhere. Or had to, I suppose, since they're probably all dead now...

Anyway I'd imagine a temple like that may have angels for guardians, possibly things like eidolons (I spelled that wrong, probably). I could see things like golems, spirits of priests, etc gurarding the temple, also. Ice creatures could be brought by the ice elementals as "guard dog" creatures.

Ice and snow could always create interesting terrain effects (you could look at some in the DMGs).

Living quarters... duh. That will actually work fairly well, especially your idea about having guardians. The guardians failed to protect them, and have been corrupted into defending the rival god's forces on the 2nd floor.

I think that's officially demolished my mental road block. Thanks, Nova!

I designed this one by sitting an Intel 486, 386, and 286 on each other for inspiration (the roof was a 186). All the columns are leaf gold, and the Roof.
