I would like help building a skill challenge that would be like a solo trap. It is an opera house that catches fire during a performance. I don't really know how to do skill challenges I usually just wing 'em on the fly. Maybe there could be people that need rescuing and such. Thanks in advance.

Well, appart from people to rescue there will be the Arsonist, people who pose a threat because they are in a Panic...

Managing the burning Building itself - 1. Put down a Map. 2. Lay down a Transparency Layer 1: fire after 1 turn. 2. Lay down a Transparency Layer 2: fire after 2 turns. 2. Lay down a Transparency Layer 3: fire after 3 turns...

There are some pages in DM's manual (I've 3.5e, I suppose there are also in 4e DM's) about burnings: it could be useful for the fire/smoke effect and damage, but don't forget it's referred to outdoor burnings, in which the wind makes fire run more quikly, so reduce the speed at which flames advance.

Well, you could do it that way or you don't even really actually NEED a map.

Since there are multiple conflicting goals (escape, rescue people, nab arsonist) maybe the party should pick one. At some point they're going to have to escape, but that could be what your fail dice represent, just how much more does the building have to burn.

Each fail die can also hit a PC with some fire damage.

If they go after the bad guy then basically they need to corner him before the place goes up in flames. Once they have him then there can be a time limited fight. If they haven't beat the enemy by then everyone either leaves immediately or burns up! That can be accomplished by just ramping some ongoing damage and/or status conditions every round.

Rescuing people I'd say just assume for each success you get, someone is rescued. Each fail someone takes damage. Eventually the PCs will have to get out or suffer the bad for failing the whole challenge. So the number of success dice they pile up just ups whatever heroic reward they get. You could also link specific success dice to some NPCs you have in there, so if you get the 3rd success die you rescue the little girl, etc. Meantime the rest of the patrons are just window dressing and the better you do the fewer burn up.
