Hey'all

I recently scheduled a game with two of my friends and their wives, they are both very creative and seemed excited by the idea of the game, one of them played once when he was a kid (he's 35 now) the other (26)  had literally not even heard of DnD or Pen and Paper RPG's until I introduced it to him. (He was from a small town in Oklahoma, the Bible Belt Buckle and just never had any kind of exposure)
Just to be clear, we all know each other very well so I'm not worrying about anything weird like religious intolerance, but would like some tips to make the introduction a little smoother.

Does anyone have any helpful advice to get the game going a little quicker so we don’t get bogged down in character creation?

I want to do a light game so I have already limited race and class choices, are there any ideas you guys have for speeding up character creation with out sacrificing to much of the game flavor and customization?

Use the character creator program.

Start at Level 1, don't allow magic items as part of character creation, and use only the PHBs. Or, just wait until the Essentials line comes out.
