In a nutshell, I am running a D&D campaign with a Xanth influence. For those not familiar with Xanth I would still appreciate some ideas. It takes place on a plane of existance created by Demon Xanth, basically so I could have an 'anything goes' type of campaign. Backstory story is Demon Xanth made a game and a wager with some other gods - yet to be determined, definetly could use more ideas here - and they are using mortals as their champions. First champion to the end wins something cool, god wins something cool and the rest are deemed losers and I'm not to sure what happens there but that's a ways away. Players start on a trail in the forest, arial view shows a labyrinth of trails with some monster encounters, trails that will magically lead them back to their starting point, a few puzzles here and there, think basic Xanth quest but much smaller scale. What I really need ae those basic encounters, again think Xanth here. It's my own plane so really the more creative the better. Much appreciate the help guys!

Not so much a concrete idea, but a question...

What if the PCs learn that once the game ends they are exulted but the game is over, and the "game board" (e.g. the world as they've known it) and all the "pieces" (their family, friends, et al.) would be doomed in some fashion?

Might there be a way to thwart the bet and keep the game going?

It isn't the players world where the game is taking place, the players themselves have been ripped from faerun and put into this seperate plane of existence for the sake of the game, so they will go back when the game is over. In the campaign story I have one character who will wake up from a dream where he is given the task of leading the other three players into an alleyway, a portal pushes all the players into the abyss and bam theyre all stuck in this new realm playing some crazy game.
