| #1mariocleanstuffNov 17, 2010 19:04:16 | I've got this idea for a campaign kicking around in my head. The main staple of the campaign would be this: At key moments, the heroes "relive" events from the past by receiving the memories of another adventuring party in the distant past. Basically, these memories will provide insight into why things are the way they are and what might be needed to change them for the better. For this purpose, each player will be flipping between two PCs at set points. Now for the problems: This basically assumes that all of the past PCs survive. How can I plan for the possibility of a death and reducing the impact thereof without taking all the danger out of the encounters? Should I just hope that luck and strategy are on my players' side? Basically all the solutions I can think of effectively remove the excitement. Making the encounters easy is undesirable. Making death into a revolving door effectively removes the threat. Rolling with the punches and introducing new adventurers could end up changing the present timeline (which, while interesting, is not something I want to explore at this point, given that these are memories and not actual time-travel). So, any suggestions on how I can make this work? |

If one in the past dies, the PC who was linked, links up with the next PC who joins. (Unless they are linked because of ancestry, in which case just go with the "Surprise turns out he knocked some chick up and didn't call her back") |

If history ends up remembering the past adventurers (though I suppose it doesn't necessarily have to, in which case the issue may well be moot), then if they don't survive, then we get ourselves a lovely time paradox. But now that I think about it, history not remembering the people or their deeds and only remembering their impact is probably a better way to go about it. Adds more mystery, too. |

Saves time and effort on your part if you want them to have various flash-backs about events (as opposed to following a single group of people.) It will also really hammer the idea that this is *different* from the regular campaign Anyway, my 2cp. |
