I'm currently working on some designs to bring casters into a 3.5 game. A caster is a pistol that uses what appears to be shotgun like shells (Caster Shells) that have a number of different effects.

In 3.5 we will first start off with dividing the caster shells in to 3 different classes. There will be more later. Casters can only fire weaponized range spells or spells that generate from the spellcaster. In otherwords, ray of frost and fireball are okay, but ice storm or shocking grasp wouldn't be.

To determine effects of the caster, first the class must be determinded. This is done by the casting cap at the back end of the shell. The matieral type determines the spell list it is drawn from.

Crystal are Wizards.
Wood is Druids
Silver is Clerical.

Silver might also have bands on it, which is used if the spell is a particular domain spell. This is a code like system, kinda like a box of chocolets.

On the back of the caster cap, is a magic circle. There is a series of symbols that allow the person to figure out what kind of shell it is. For example a shell with two symblols, Fire and Ray basically says this is a fire elemental ray spell that it will fire. The circle would then be so ornate depending on the spell's level. with 0 level spells being the simplist, and 9th level being the most ornate.

the "powder" portion of a caster shell, is actually residium. ornate cirlces around the powder canister tell what caster level the shell is. It starts from the first elvel the spell is capable of being cast as the first notch. So for fireball, that would be level 5. Then for each time the spell upgrades there will be another notch. Magic Missle starts at level 1, at level 3 it gets its first upgrade, so the shell would have only two circles around it and cast MM as a level 3 spellcaster.

Costwise, these are expensive. I don't know how much the actual gun will be, but each shell is thought to be as if it was created via the craft wand ability. It also runs off this feat, but goes all the way up to 9th level.

Once the residium canister and the casting cap are together and infused with a spell, they cannot be seperated. Once fired both are utterly destroyed that they cannot be used again.

Cool idea, but wish it'd be used for noncasters instead who need it. I mean sure, there's a fine line between magic and pseduo-science... But I thought of making my own homebrew fighter with feats centered around "gun control" lulz!

He was basically an infomercial adventurer. Advertising the craftsmanship and new engineered weapons of his good friend and getting paid/free guns to do it. Immagine if the shamwow guy or Billy Maes was showing you how awesome a firearm was cause he shot some zombie in the head with it. As such, there was even a need for a key stat for the feats. (They were pretty broken)

Charisma based gunsmiths for advertising the weapon itself. Provided me with more "ammunition". I had to make peformance checks as I did battle inorder to make a memorable battle and get paid more.

Wisdom based gunsmiths for actual better marksmanship and advertised through my own talents rather then through buzzwords and a babyface.

Intelligence based gunsmiths who actually explain the details of how the guns work, and bombard people with explanations making them think it's legitamate and be enthralled by this "it's magic.. but it isn't!"

Evidently I could see Rangers being gunsmiths by being "hunters" in the wilderness or urban areas. Barbarian gunsmith=Scarface.. lol! Even a paladin gunsmith. (Vash the stampede) Who can turned his smites into ranged smites.

I love informercials and thats basically my dream is to be one.. lol! Specially the Rosland Capital guy. "The dollar? The en, the Euro?! *crushes and throws the dollar* UNREALIABLE!!! If you want security, you want gold! At Rosland Capital!"

I could just see me doing the same line but instead with weapons. "The dagger, the battleaxe, the scroll of fireball? UNREALIABLE!!!"

Interesting idea, I really like it. I remember that gun from Outlaw Star and my god was that thing awesome, especially those caster shells Gene got at the end of the series. I only have a few questions about it; how will the ammo for this gun be treated? Will the owner of the gun be able to buy them like arrows for a gun and carry as many as he likes? Or will the shells be treated like actual spells and he'll be able to only carry so many as he levels up?
