| #1temhotaJan 20, 2010 20:47:09 | So I am looking for a program that can help me manage a planned necromancer character. I am hoping to be able to make it work like a flow chart with the name of the character, then have it work down the list to the various minions he has, and who they are responsible and so on and so forth. In addition I would like to able to click on any one of them and be able to see a character sheet of sorts for that specific individual. Hopefully that makes sense and hopefully someone out there knows what I am looking for. I imagine I could do it with Excel, though when I played around with that it just didn't have the right look to me. Not as clean and organized as I was hoping. Thanks much. (Hope this was the right place for this.) |

It's generally intended for DMs to make flowcharts of their plotlines and such, but it sounds like it would work great for what you are wanting. You can have a flowchart with sub-charts under each section of the main one (if it gets that complex), write notes in the description blocks, theres even a campaign encyclopedia section where you can hyperlink entries to each other. Drat, beat me to it. +1 Masterplan, though I sometimes find it sort of cumbersome. What you could do is use Word's Shapes tools to set up a flowchart, and add a hyperlink to each box. If you right-click on a shape you can insert a hyperlink. The funny thing about hyperlinks is that they can actually link to other documents or pictures. I couldn't get it to work with CharBuilder files because XP is being stupid and not recognizing the SheetViewer as an EXE, but you can do this with other word documents, PDFs, or jpg files. If you copy-paste from MonsterBuilder I find those statblocks quite useful for NPCs because they are much easier to read at a glance. ANYWAY! You should be able to browse your computer for a file when you choose "Insert Hyperlink" but if that box doesn't show up you can type "file:////" followed by the filepath "C:\MyFiles\BBEG Bio.txt" The computer should be able to interperet that and open it in Word/Notepad or whatever the default is for that type of file. That big huge explanation is actually pretty easy, and I've done things like that on occasion, but it would really suck if you were planning on changing the file very often, because Word is kind of dumb when it comes to Shapes. For mostly static flowcharts but oft-changing detail files it should work excellently. :/ |
