| #1xeowolfApr 14, 2010 18:58:34 | Hey all. Thematically I have decided this character is basically a defensive monk. Since others have called it that. This has been tricky to build and balance thus far because immediate interrupts are very powerful. But I don't want to build moves where the attack is set up before hand because the theme of the character is that he does not strike first. For a clean look at the character thus far: Tranquil Defender ClassIn a nutshell: The character i envision is sort of a martial artist in flare, such that he doesn't wear heavy armor. They act as a defender role and have powers / abilities that are immediate interrupts and reactions with a lot of push/pull. How it works: Character would not have much if any offensive attacks that deal damage. On their turn they may take minors, movements, or things like total defense or other assists. Probably other powers that have utility, marks, or buffs. As counter point to the lack of damage they put out they instead prevent damage from their opponents. By using immediate interrupts to counter or stop an enemy attack. I have been refining this idea about so here are some early basics: These names are place holders Class Traits Role: Defender. You are unmatched for speed in the battle field and your foes would be wised to keep that in mind when facing off against you. Though you wear no armor perfering your speed and agility, you are not to be taken lightly. Hard to hit and fast to react to the chaos of a battle, you are adebt catching opponents off guard or turning their attacks against them. Key Abilities: Dexterity, Wisdom, and Constitution. Bonus to Defense: +2 Reflex, +1 Will. Armor Proficiencies: Cloth Weapon Proficiencies: Unarmed Strike Class Features Defensive Challenge You are the ire of your enemies in battle as you constantly hinder their attacks. Everytime you successfully cause an attack to miss, you may choose to mark the target until the end of their next turn. In this regard it is possible to have multiple targets marked in a single round. Marked enemies who make an attack that does not include you take a -2 penalty to their attack. In addition, whenever an adjacent enemy marked with Defensive Challenge shifts or makes an attack that does not include you, immediatly provokes an attack of opportunity regardless of any powers used. Swift Step With some quick footwork you catch an advancing foe off guard. You may use the following in place of opportunity attacks. Opportunity Attack Target: Triggering Creature Attack: Dexterity vs Reflex Hit: Target is knocked prone. Unarmored Defense While you are wearing cloth armor or no armor and are not using a shield, you gain a +2 bonus to AC. This bonus increases to +2 at 11th level and +3 at 21st level. Pacifists Resolve Being a pacifist means waiting for the enemy to strike first and using their momentum and attacks against them. Should you not take a standard action on your turn, you may perform two immediate actions instead of one. In order to gain this benefit you can only take 1 move and 1 minor action on your turn. Level 1 At Wills Dazing Touch You know the exact spot to strike to confuse and disorient your opponent. At Will <> Implement, Psionic Standard Action Touch Target: One Creature Attack: Dexterity vs Fortitude Hit: Target is dazed until the end of your next turn Calm Riposte With a quick strike to the wrist you attempt to deflect in the incoming attack. At Will <> Implement, Psionic Immediate Interrupt (special) Trigger: Enemey attacks you or adjacent ally. Attack: Dexterity vs Reflex Hit: Your target takes a penalty to their attack equal to 1 + your Dex Modifier. Special: This power may only cause 1 attack to miss per round. Silent Storm Defense Your swift movements make it hard for the enemy to find an opening to attack. At Will<> Psionic Minor Action Close Burst 1 Target: You and allies in burst Special: You may shift 2 before using this power Effect: You and your allies gain a power bonus of +1 to AC and Reflex until the start of your next turn. This bonus increases to +2 at 11th level and +3 at 21st level. Level 1 Encounters Stunning Strike With a quick strike in just the right place you have left your opponent helpless. Encounter <> Implement, Psiconic Standard Action Touch Special: You may shift your Dexterity modifier before making this attack. Target: One Creature Attack: Dexterity vs Will Hit: Target is stunned save ends Level 1 Dailys Snatch the Pebble With lightning speed you deflect an incoming arrow or swiftly summon your inner spirit to rebuke a magical attack. Daily <> Psionic Immediate Interrupt Special: You may shift 1 + your wisdom modifier before negating this attack Trigger: You or an adjacent ally is hit with a ranged attack Effect: The attack misses Level 2 Utility Powers Tree in the Wind You feel the force of an enemies attack wash over you and like a tree you bend and give but never move. Encounter <> Psionic Immediate Interrupt Personal Trigger: You are pulled, pushed, or slid Effect: You do not move, however, any other effects or damage are still applied. Level 3 Encounter Powers Martyrs Push You rush in just in time to shove your allies out of harms way taking the hit yourself. Encounter <> Psiconic Immediate Reaction Trigger: One or Two allies are hit with an attack Effect: You push one or two allies out of harms way and the attack is checked against your defenses. Special: You may shift your speed + 2 but must take the spot of one of your allies. Level 5 Daily Powers Calming the winds of War You calm your spirit and focus your senses. You can hear the attack on the wind before it hits and are able to intercept it. Daily <> Implement, Psionic, Stance Standard Action Personal Effect: For the rest of the encounter or until the stance ends, you and adjacent allies receive a power bonus equal to 2 + your Wisdom modifier against all ranged attacks. Level 6 Utility Powers Centered Defense With a deep breath you calm and focus yourself. You find that you can more easily evade enemy attacks. Daily<> Psionic, Stance Minor Action Personal Effect: Until the stands ends, you gain a +2 power bonus to all defenses. |
| #2jgumbyrxApr 14, 2010 22:30:51 | if you're up to some conversion work, take a look at "Apostle of Peace" from Book of Exalted Deeds (3.x). If nothing else, it should give you some ideas (and taking a look at the exalted feats couldn't hurt either). |
| #3xeowolfApr 14, 2010 22:58:56 | I remember that book. I actually built a character using that it was rather broken but amusing all the same. I believe it was off the vow of poverty set of stuff. Had some 40 AC before level 5. Ill have to dig that book up and give it a look. Although I want to build something specifically for 4e. |
| #4pluisjenApr 15, 2010 5:20:45 | I once made a draft for a Divine Heavy-armor Defender that dealt no damage... maybe you can scrounge some ideas of of it. You can find it here: community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... |
| #5xeowolfApr 15, 2010 16:44:56 | Thanks I will give that a look! I also thought of a few balance issues with the powers I provided. Specifically an at will that can stop a daily out right would be a bit broken. So I came up with some new level 1 At Wills Calm Riposte With a quick strike to the wrist you attempt to deflect in the incoming attack. At Will Immediate Interrupt Trigger: Enemey attacks you or adjacent ally. Attack: Dice vs Reflex Hit: Your target takes a penalty to their attack equal to 1 + your Dex Modifier. Silent Storm Defense Your swift movements make it hard for the enemy to see a clear point to attack. At Will Standard Action Close Burst 1 Effect: You and your allies gain a bonus of +1 to AC and Reflex until the start of your next turn. Special: You may shift 2 before initiating this ability. The names are just temp but those should be more balanced. Remember your not actually doing damage the point of the class is to prevent damage. |
