Core Classes Part 2: At-Will Powers

This is a pretty interesting series of articles. I was never into d20 modern. I'm a big Fallout fan but my friends never really expressed great interest in a more realistic setting.

Dave Chalker (calls himself The Game on this website) is taking a very minimalist approach with the variant setting he's created. I wouldn't call this a system overhaul since it is all essentially compatible with anything that is 4th Edition. The contrast is the balance. These classes get far less when compared to their D&D counterparts. The one exception is that overall, the classes seem to get more skills. The weakness of these characters is also part of the simplicity of the options given. Classes share the same powers list, but depending on the class you've chosen the power will grant an extra effect. Asides from the modern setting, I really dig the simplicity of all of this. It brings D&D back to what it was in 2nd Edition, when it was all about naming your character, picking a race, and getting killed almost every adventure. These characters are easy to make and are not meant to make it through an entire campaign. It's refreshing and helps this 4th Power Project stand out asides from just setting.

I really think he's doing something interesting here by opening it up to the public to get feedback from even at the earliest stages of development. I think we could all contribute somehow and make this into something really cool.

Looks interesting. I will keep an eye on this. I really like the idea of a scalable system to adapt other modern systems like Call of Cthulhu or MCWoD.

As a big gamma world fan I'm interested in 4E d20 modern.  However, I was never too keen on some d20 modern features and those appear to be what this rewrite is keeping.  I prefered the omega world's explorer class to the stat classes from d20 modern.  Hopefully Metamorphosis Alpha will satisfy my desire.

Bah.. The abstract combat thing lost me though. Last time i tried that, we were like six and it was always a struggle between wether or not I blocked the laser with my blaster.
