Cooperative Campaigns....experiences?

In addition to the regular game I run every week, sometimes we like to play side-games if we find we are able to get together on another day or if players are out of town.  I though a fun option might be a cooperative campaign where all the participants take a turn at DMing and pitch in on world building.

What I did was sketch out a region with some geographical areas, a town and a city.  I labeled just a few of the areas and wrote some very brief and generic descriptions.  At this point it is unknown if the area is a region, country, territory or multiple countries.  I described the town in a little more depth, as it will be the start of the campaign and the first adventure.

I then wrote down some known deities, races, inhabitants, organizations and one historic event to form a short background for the first adventure.

As characters are introduced, players can introduce their own deities, races, organizations and events or add details to what I have come up with initially.

As players take turns as DM they will be able to add in even more details about areas, inhabitants, history etc.

I thought it would be fun and interesting to see how the world develops as details are added and the map expands.

The players are keen on the freedom it will allow with character concepts and the prospects of participating in world building with their character backstories and turns as DM.

I am sure other players have participated in similar types of campaigns and was curious as to what their experiences were with them.

I think one important key to it is for everyone to add to the world slowly, allowing everyone to build upon each others ideas, and preventing any single event, character etc. from dominating the campaign.
