I'm creating an artificer in 3.5 D&D campaign, and I'm looking to make a magic item that can be used in weapon and armor creation as a heat source, without it taking up as much space as a furnance and an anvil. I was thinking of a magic plate that heats any metal it touches, as with the Heat Metal spell, only this allows crafing metal items. My DM approved, but we're having trouble coming up with a price, because it doesn't emulate the spell to the letter, it creates a new effect by relying on that spell. If it's not too much of a bother, could you please try and estimate how much such an item should cost, with an explanation? Or maybe come up with another item tha achieves the same goal? Or maybe help me perfect the little kinks in this item? |

I'm not trying to create an item that allows me to switch metal items into other items instantly, I want a magic item that takes up less space than a furnance used to crafting weapons and armors but still functions the same way. It doesn't need any in-combat use. |

Once a day, when this mystic cord is wrapped around a metal object and the activation phrase is spoken it heats the metal as the heat metal spell with the additional property that it may be used in the place of a furnace in the creation of items. |
