In an old campaign I had a brother, lets call him Naeros, and his sister Rowan, that were the leaders of a cult that slowly built its way into a large army. Naeros was a minor villain, but the one who always had his plans foiled by the players. One last time the group ran into Naeros and said that if they ran into him again he wasn't going to survive. Naeros vanished from the campaign and the campaign moved to the final battle of his sister Rowan against the heroes. In the end of this massive battle the heroes and Rowan were pulled into Ravenloft. Now I'm building the sequel where the army has invaded a number of large cities but without a leader it won't take long for city residents to regain control. With the previous heroes out of the picture, Naeros steps in to lead the evil army. Naeros under another name is also, and always has been, a servant to the leaded of a small city that hasn't been conquered by the army yet. If his plans aren't ruined he'll soon change that be able to step in as leader of the city and be on his way to becoming the leader of the land as well. Naeros unfortunately will meet a new group of heroes that take up residence in this city to defend it against any future attacks. Naeros will take up the saying this time, "keep your friends close and your enemies closer," he'll be put in the position to help the heroes and at the same time try to find ways to get rid of them. Nothing for Naeros ever comes easy unfortunately. The encounter... When the heroes finally realise who the villain actually is, and go to his lair to deal with him and find missing children sitting around a table chanting and singing some kind of strange song. The song I imagine them singing is something like Oingo Boingo's song Insanity and the video if you've ever seen it has little girls in it tearing apart dolls or something like that. I'm also picturing Naeros transforming over time to becoming something similar to the Joker from the las Batman movie. Any other ideas to make the encounter more interesting and creepy? |

I LOVE doing this to my group. We are a very battle-centric group and they get super excited and sometimes really uneasy. Which is what I go for. ;)
P.S. I'm really not a jerk and my players love how I've been running it. Just wanted to throw that last bit in there. lol... |
