Cross-City Race Motivations

I just finished reading the Cross-City Race article, and I love the idea of having this be an event the PCs participate in during an upcoming festival.

The only problem is that I'm having trouble coming up with a good motivation for the PCs to enter the competition. I don't want the PCs to simply win it for the sake of getting the grand prize - there needs to be something else. Something outside the race that makes them need to win.

For example (it's the only idea I have so far):
The PCs get into some sort of dispute with a rival adventuring group, an organization, or an important NPC. Rather than settling the score via combat, both parties agree that whoever wins the upcoming cross-city race will be the winner (and settle the dispute).

I need help brainstorming what other motivations could drive the PCs into participating in the race (as well as a great reason to win it), as well as fleshing out those ideas. I feel that such motivations would make the race even more exciting, since the PCs will spend a lot of time planning before the race to find as many ways as possible to gaurantee their success.

Maybe some more info will help. Do the PCs have backgrounds that you can use? If this is a hometown for one of the PCs, that alone could be enough reason for them to be interested in race. Old rivals will egg th PCs, or old neighbors will want to see what they accomplished, doubting what ever story they here and reminiscing on the past embarrassments of the PC.
