Crystal Cave music!?

i love music for atmosphere.  it can set a mood better than $1,000-worth of minis, tiles, and scenery combined.

i'm looking for ideas for background music in my campaign's first foray into the Crystal Cave to recover the long-lost final book of the Song of Ennarani.  here's a bit of flavor to set the mood:

The cave entrance seems to extend for miles under the earth.  You trudge through the absolute darkness with nothing except a torch, feeling your hands against the cold, damp rock wall for guidance.

After what seems like an eternity, you finally reach the main chamber.  The chamber is massive - giant shards of quartz crystal jut from the ground, the walls, and the ceiling.  The room is definitely brighter than the entrance, for some reason - a soft purple glow envelops the cavern from a source you can't quite identify.  The solid rock walls are littered with flicks of quartz that dot the massive chamber like stars.  Soft trickles of water flow down the walls and form tiny creeks around you, dividing the hard sand beneath your feet into miniature islands.

so?  what do you hear in the background?

i was thinking of artists that lean towards the "modern" era, but whatever you can think of, let me know!

it migth be a bit poppy for what your looking for, but "Angel's and Airwaves" do a trippy emo, mysticism type of sound. you'll get what i mean if you hear something like "call to arms" or "The adventure" or even "It Hurts", but the emo-rock-pop of it may or may not be what your looking, the main thing is i can't see talkign over it, but *shrug*

For something ethereal and slightly spooky, you might try some Dead Can Dance.

This is a *really* old reference, but if you can find the "Ice Caverns" theme from Ultima Underworld 2 (it's a midi file - yes, that old), it fits the bill perfectly.

I'm hearing Andreas Vollenweider- he makes New Age music, if that sounds like it'd fit to you- the album Caverna Magica starts off with cave sounds, and shifts into a somewhat ethereal/mystical music.

lala.com has his "Cosmopoly" album...  still googling for caverna magica but he sounds interesting.  good call

yeah it's a bit poppy considering what i'm looking for.  on a totally unrelated note, generally i find it funny to see how emo has changed over the years - the overall "snarkiness" of the vocals has kind of subsided (for example, compare early something corporate to the latest jack's mannequin)

I would turn to video game music. It's made for the exact same reason, just a different medium of communication. I looked at Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.

Sealed Door
Schala's Theme (might be too happy though)
Singing Mountain
Black Omen
Zeal Palace
Ocean Palace
Ephemeral Memory (might be too sad though)
Departed Souls

It's the closest I can think of right now.

I second the idea of using video game music. Here are two tracks that remind me of your description from games I've played recently:

Temple of Droplets (Zelda: The Minish Cap)
Crystal Palace (Paper Mario)

I like the Temple of Droplets. It fits very well in my opinion. At least as far as I interpreted the area.

Ghosts 1-4 from Nine Inch Nails covers most all of my musical needs for my games. #1, #6, and #13 all have a sound that works nicely for crystaline areas, each with a different kind of feeling to 'em. #1 has a more sad and barren feel to it, while 6 lends itself to the ancient and the unexplored very well, and 13 gives a very nice calm setting to it.
