Im thinking of throwing some cured items into my magic mix to keep the party on their toes (this springs from my recent D&DBasics game where the party have a small collection of magic items that no one dears to put on because they fear the effects)

But how do you do this considering Wizard desided that all magic items are identifiable after a short rest?

Well Iv added in the Ritual Identifie to counter this.
Level 1, Market price 50g, Componant cost 10g, target 1 item, 30 min cast.
Im also thinking of adding an Arcana roll to the ritual to see if they caster picks up any hiden elements. The lowest roll would give all the basic magic item stats but higher rolls would be requiered to reveal say curses or Artifact bonuses.

Now for the actual curse!
Well... Iv not had any real experiance with cursed items so thats where you guys come in! I can think of a million diffrent cure effects but I want to know what your favorite crused item effect?

Wait, where does it say that all magic items are identified after a short rest?  I must've missed that, or forgot it...huh.

Anyway, here's a simple solution.  I did this in my game early on, kinda to get payback on a player who blew off my game one week...anyway!  Game him a ring, greater ring of invisibility(not even sure it exists, thought it did but not the point).  Anyway I allowed him to roll Arcana and identify it but the thing is, the curse doesn't happen until he activates the power of the ring.  Then everything his character was wearing, turns invisible.  Basically making them into the Emperor's New Clothes scenario and all his gear he had on at the time of use would stay invisible until the curse was broken(never did figure out how that'd happen).

So my suggestion would be doing something like that.  Having the curse only trigger when they either wear the item or activate the basic power.  You can go basically the route of the curse stays hidden and inactive until it's triggered so it's not something likely to be picked up on just a normal identifying of the item.

As for helps with what curses, that's hard to say.  Aside from mine I gave above, what kinda ideas do YOU have.  They're your players, your game.  The best I can do is say that if you're going to hand out cursed objects you either are trying to target a particular player which means the object has to be something they'll use or else it'll go to waste, or if it's just a general item that's meant for anyone in the group then the curse needs to be the same way.

Basically, if the cursed item is meant for a particular player the curse needs to be something that'll affect that player or else who really cares right?  If it's a general cursed item, then it needs to be a general curse.

Hmm, if you just wanna have fun I started my campaign with the group getting into a mansion to put down a group of goblins.  I had the entire place booby trapped with non damaging traps just for fun.  I had sticky floor panels, also had traps that changed player's color(rolled random).  So say they triggered the trap, I'd roll and say it landed on blue.  So now they and everything on their person was turned magically blue.  Or I had a few times where it triggered mild transformations like I gave them cat ears, scales, those kinda things.  Nothing that mechanically affected their characters it was just meant to be amusing...mainly for me haha!

There was a great article I read, I wish I had the PDF here, but it's on my other computer.  The gist of it was...Oh wait I remember, I search on "Necklace of Strangulation 4e" and found it again:

at-will.omnivangelist.net/2010/03/the-tr...

That is the model I've using for my cursed items, the gist of it is, who would spend the time crafting an item taking a lot of time and expense that had no benefit to the creator.  So the article describes a way to create cursed items that have blessings that may outway the curse, and actual make the item useful.

An example may be a weapon or implement that allows crits to occur on 18-20, like some Powers out there...but the wielder is also crit'd on an 18-20...Does the risk out way the reward.  I have some strikers out there that say it would, however if I was playing a Tank I would say no.

Very good article, though.
