| #1Dragon9Nov 08, 2008 10:43:38 | An attempt to redo the Daggerspell Mage as a 4e PP. This was a bit tough seeing as the requirements for the old 3.x Daggerspell Mage required you to have Sneak Atttack and be a 5th level arcane caster. Since the old PrC seemed more geared towards fighting with daggers and using arcane power through them, I decided to base it mainly off the Rogue class (most wizards won't be getting into melee) and tried to make their powers a combination of both melee attacks and wizard powers as a sort of striker/controller amalgam. Let me know what you think. Daggerspell Mage Prerequisite: Rogue and Wizard Dagger Familiarity (11th): A Daggerspell Mage may use a dagger as an Implement. If you normally have Arcane Implement Mastery as a class feature, you may use the dagger as the implement you specialized in. Daggerspell Advantage (11th): When using a Wizard power, you may apply your sneak attack damage if the conditions would normally allow you to. Daggerspell’s Insight (16th): When you spend an action point to take an extra action, you gain a bonus to both attack and damage rolls equal to your Intelligence modifier. Daggerspell Mage Exploits Arcane Distraction Daggerspell Mage Attack 11 As you slip through your enemies defenses a surge of power from you makes him writhe in pain, giviing your allies an opening. Encounter * Arcane, Weapon Standard action Melee weapon Special: You must be wielding a dagger. Target: One creature you have combat advantage against. Attack: Dexterity vs. AC Hit: 2[W] + Dexterity Modifier Damage, make a secondary attack against the target. Secondary Attack: Intelligence vs. Will Hit: The target suffers a penalty to all defenses equal to your Intelligence modifier until the end of your next turn. Arcane Infusion Daggerspell Mage Utility 12 You funnel your power into your weapon, imbuing it with arcane might. Encounter * Arcane Minor action Personal Effect: You may imbue your weapon with the At-Will Wizard Spell you chose when you took the Arcane Initiate feat. The next time you hit with an attack with that weapon, the first target you hit suffers the effects of the imbued spell as if it were hit by it. The effects of the imbued spell do not carry over to any additional targets allowed by the power you used for the attack and cannot create an area effect or zone. Lightning Rod Daggerspell Mage Attack 20 You hurl daggers at your opponents, using them as a conduit for the elemental might you unleash. Daily * Arcane, Lightning, Weapon Standard action Close burst 3 Special: you must be wielding a dagger Target: Each enemy in burst Attack: Dexterity vs. AC Hit: 2[W] + Dexterity modifier damage. Make a secondary attack against each target hit. Miss: Half damage and no secondary attack. Secondary Attack: Intelligence + 4 vs. Reflex Hit: 3d6 + Intelligence modifier lightning damage, and the target takes ongoing 10 lightning damage and is stunned (save ends both). Miss: Half damage, no ongoing damage, and the target is stunned until the end of your next turn. |
| #2Dragon9Nov 08, 2008 13:32:25 | Whoops... I got rid of the Prereq for the Novice Power Swap feat as it was in there from an original version that used the encounte rpower you got from that in Arcane Infusion. But that was too strong, so that prereq wasn't need anymore. |
| #3matthewswiftNov 08, 2008 13:58:56 | I like this. I never used the prestige in 3.x but I always wanted to. What was the name of the mage's counterpart? perhaps a wizard/multiclass rogue PP could serve as this guy's parallel? As it is I like the class and intend to try it out whenever I can. I'm no expert on balance though... |
| #4ff6shadowNov 08, 2008 14:46:56 | Really. just make the Prerequisites: Rogue, Wizard. Arcane Initiate has you be considered a wizard for this anyway. I don't see anything too broken in the powers, though Arcane Infusion needs an action type. Arcane Distraction's secondary effect feels way to powerful, mostly becuase the Weapon proficiency bonus will still apply to the attack, making the secondary an easy hit. I suggest making it a single turn, or only 1/2 your Intelligence modifier as a penalty. |
| #5PennarinNov 08, 2008 14:49:58 | I can't judge if it's balanced or not, but gush it looks awesome! Even better than the original, IMO. I wanted to make "monster" daggermages but couldn't convert clearly to 4e, with this I'll make a lite version and voila! |
| #6Dragon9Nov 08, 2008 15:01:21 | I like this. I never used the prestige in 3.x but I always wanted to. What was the name of the mage's counterpart? It was the Daggerspell Shaper. It was Druid based (you needed Wild Shape). So I havent' even though about converting that one, not until PHB 2 comes out and we see what they did with the druid. Really. just make the Prerequisites: Rogue, Wizard. Arcane Initiate has you be considered a wizard for this anyway. Hmmm... good point. Although a wizard with Sneak of Shadows could then qualify as well. Granted such a thing would be a suboptimal PP choice for a Wizard so one could say they wouldn't take it. I'll give that some thought. I don't see anything too broken in the powers, though Arcane Infusion needs an action type. Good catch! Fixed. Arcane Distraction's secondary effect feels way to powerful, mostly becuase the Weapon proficiency bonus will still apply to the attack, making the secondary an easy hit. I suggest making it a single turn, or only 1/2 your Intelligence modifier as a penalty. Good points. Thanks. I figured as a Rogue based class Int would probably be a tertiary stat at best, even if you are multiclassing. Further thought says that a rogue (especially an Artful Dodger) could easily have Int as their secondary stat. I think I'll change it to the end of your next turn. Fixed. |
| #7ff6shadowNov 08, 2008 15:08:02 | Right, I was intending that you allow a Wizard with Sneak of Shadows to get in. It may be suboptimal, but it's a very flavorful option that a wand wizard may be interested in. If you go this way, you should consider allowing the dagger to be used with Implement Mastery as well, similar to the Wizard of the Spiral Tower. |
| #8Dragon9Nov 08, 2008 15:18:59 | Good points. I like. I'm wondering the prereqs should read "Rogue class and Arcane Initiate feat or Wizard class and Sneak of Shadows feat." Or just "Rogue and Wizard classes." Both seem like they could open for confusion... The scond may cause people to think you could take it just as a rogue or just as a wizard. Maybe if it read: Either Rogue class with Arcane Initiate feat or Wizard class with Sneak of Shadows feat. |
| #9ff6shadowNov 08, 2008 15:43:34 | Rogue and Wizard should be fine. |
| #10PennarinSep 09, 2009 0:22:29 | Bumping this, since my old link for it failed after the forum change, and that searching for the thread revealed a slew of others in which people had no idea this paragon path even existed. Plus it's pretty good |
| #11generalhenrySep 09, 2009 3:21:36 | a 5th level arcane caster
so why are you limiting it to wizard? why not make it rogue and any arcane |
| #12AlycatSep 10, 2009 2:02:00 | a 5th level arcane caster Indeed, the first thing that came to mind was that the current incarnation of the Sorcerer is, to a large extend, a Daggerspell Mage - in particular if you hand him a Winged Dagger. You could potentially build on that rather than turn a class into it. |
