Divine Metamagic Variant?

So, It has been my observation that DMM is a little bent (well, okay, totally broken), and I wanted to come up with a way to mitigtate it, without making it useless (because it's just too f'n cool to simply ban outright). It seems that the only mitigating factor that is built-in is the fact that it is so feat-intensive, and for a feat-starved class (but that in and of itself seems a bit extreme). I guess I'm looking to "split the middle", so to speak.

Here's the variant that I've come-up with:
- DMM is a single feat -- i.e., take it once, and it can be applied to any/all of your MM feats.
- cannot DMM a spell that you wouldn't normally be able to. for example, a 9th lvl caster could only DMM-quicken 1st lvl spells
- in the event that said cleric is a dual-caster, DMM could only be used on his cleric spells/spell-slots

I thought about taking away the spontaneity, but decided against it since it already uses so many turn attempts.

The one cleric in my game said that he thought it worked fine; but I wanted to get some other opinions -- maybe something I/we hadn't thought of.

Thanks.

Excuse me for asking but: Where are the Divine Metamagic rules? I have yet to see such a thing in any of the PHBs or the Divine Power supplement.

I'd like to give you feedback but this is all news to me.

Ah, that would make sense. I haven't seen a lot of 3rd edittion talk around here lately.
Sorry I can't say much, I've wiped my memory clean of all but the bare minimum of the 3e rules. It's not something I want to go back to anytime soon.

EDIT:
Sorry if that was less than constructive. You actually got me remembering the old magic and meta-magic system.

Okay, so with that taken into account and looking at the 3 modifications you've suggested: it looks good. I almost wish things were like that when I was playing 3rd.
So, in other words: I see no problem with your proposed variant. Go with it.

I fully understand and appreciate the need to start with a clean slate on which to build something new.
I very much appreciate both the response as well as the effort.

divine metamagic is really only broken when it allows you to cast at a level you normally can't. the limitation alone stops it from breaking the game with a lot of the persistent spell stuff.

go with the normal other stuff: nightsticks that don't stack, ect... limit the ability to stack turning attempts via items to stop them from walking around with a belt of nightsticks.
