We've all had moments where, either by an awful roll or a unexpected blunder, we find ourselves in a situation where we can't expect our party to escape alive. Unfortunate of course, and at the moment extremely depressing. But after the dust settles, the rituals are enacted, and everyone gets set back along the straight and narrow they are the subject of at least a few good jokes.
I once had a brand new player get crit for more than double her hit points (back in 3.5) by a troll hunter that got every possible maximum roll you could imagine. I of course felt terrible at the time, but now she can't resist showing off her "scars".
What are some of your favorite atrocities you were forced to enact against your players?

Had a party with two clerics. They were supposed to walk into this chamber with several dozen undead - turn most of them - and clean up by bashing a few heads. Three rounds of dismal rolls ... out of turn checks ... room still full of undead ... ouch.

(in 3.5) a half-dragon human, flying in a massive forest. just for fun, i decided that he flew by a couple o' orcs walkin down a trail.

They each throw a javelin, critical, max damage; and critical max damage. The half-dragon survived, but was pinned to a tree.

I felt very bad,

In a crazy campaign back in 3.5 with ever body being half something (dm asked us too) My party at level 2 and the templates we took on a group of rocs. and we thwomped them good. after the samurai grappled one with a nat 20, the mindflayer half ate some brains and me (half celestial monk vow of poverty) and the half fiend sorcerer took down the last two using physics. (we killed 20 cat girls in that one battle)

PCs coplete dungeon, and receive sweet new items.

NPCs of a benificial party are to talk to PCs.

PCs use sweet new items to force DM into making sweet new NPCs.

sad panda, more like getting woken up in the middle of a dream than a nightmare though...

---

Here's one:

I ran 4 hardcore power gamers at level 13 in my second try at 4.0. That was a nightmare. They proceeded to literally juggle a dragon between them (on the grounds that forced movement should produce attacks of opportunity...) Dragon that should have killed them lasted about 6 rounds, and the PCs took almost no damage. What made things worse was I was running on 3 hours of sleep between two days, they stressed me so good I was sick all the next week. Buggers.

Whoops. Forced movement does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

My players cannot role play, They are all either semi-power-gamers, off the deep end, or both.
I think I'll switch to a dungeon crawl as soon as I can, but I made my entire setting as a semi-sandbox.
Well, As soon as I finish the slivers campaign I'm working on, I'll get them in it.
thankfully none of them are actually good at power-gaming and the Ritalin reject is kept in check by the other semi-crazy one.

Oh, then these are not powergamers you're dealing with, sir. They are Munchkins.

Powergamer: ignores roleplay in favor of minmaxing a character for maximum pwnage.

Munchkin: ignore the rules in favor of maximum pwnage.

Munchkin makes sense. It's one of their favorite games

Actually, no. The are Cheaters. Intentionally hiding a rule from the GM so you can win battles is flat-out cheating, no better than lying about die rolls.
