Dodge

I am currently playing 4E with a firend of mine who played D6 Star Wars with me for many, many years.

He likes the D20 system, but hates the fact that there is no way to roll to dodge an attack.

I know you can roll D20 instead of taking the base 10 on AC, but that just doesn't have the same flavor.

Off the top of my head, I was thinking that maybe as an interrupt one per round, or even as a minor action (it would blow their minor action for the round, unless they already used it on their turn), they could make an Acrobatics or Athletics check and add that to thier AC as a dodge.

What do you think?

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Instead of a check what if you allow him to spend an action point to negate an attack against him.

Well why does he have such a beef about not rolling to dodge an attack?  I mean that's the whole point of defenses, they incorporate your armor, natural resilience, as well as your chance of simply moving out of the way because generally you're not just standing still in your square but at least our group generally feels your shifting and dodging and whatnot.

But you're friend's reasons aside, making an Athetic/Acrobatics check and adding the result to your AC once per round is crazy.  That would be a big bonus to AC, depending on the check.  And being able to constantly do that every round as a minor action is pretty much giving him at at will utility power.

Rampant makes a good suggestion, but I would go so far as to say it negates the attack.  D20 Modern's action points let you roll a d6 and add the result to your attacks, and I believe defenses as well.  So that's what I'd do.  Let him spend an action point to get a d6, or since he only has 1-3 depending on tier(not taking into account milestones), and can still only use one per encounter, so maybe make it a d8 or even a d10.

That way he can make a "dodge" or whatever once per encounter, and potentially save his but by rolling and adding the result to the defense that's being attacked.  If it misses great, but he also sacrifices using an action point in that encounter for an potentially extra attack.  I would also, if you do this, make clear that using an action point this way doesn't trigger any paragon path abilities, but that's just me.  My personal opinion is to tell your friend this is how the game works, "dodging" is all part of your defenses, so if it misses you dodged the attack, if it hits, you didn't dodge and get on with life, but maybe the above will help ya out if you are looking for house ruling something.

I know the iron guardian paragon path (PHB3, battlemind) gets an ability where he sacrifices his standard action for near indestructability. (d20. 1-10 half damage, 11-20 no damage)

Or maybe subsituting the bonus AC of a class (I'm thinking monk, barbarian or avenger) to a variable he could roll

I don't know what his class is but many classes have utility powers that allow "dodges" of different kind and I'm betting there's some skill powers as well.

Just checked and for example "Reflexive Dodge" or "Tumbling Dodge" are pretty much exactly what this player wants. Just tell him to pick those up and he's good to go.

How about, instead of adding 10 to AC like normal, the defender has to roll a d20. It's almost the same thing, except more swingy.
